My Daiwa Tatula Type R is busted and I’m looking for suggestions in the $100-200 range. Magnetic brakes preferred. Should I just go with another Tatula, or do you guys have an opinion on something better/equally as good? 
 

I’m strictly bank fishing. Primarily pulling cranks.

Just in case, I like both Daiwa and Shimano reels......  I would go with the Shimano Curado DC for crankbaits.  I know that the OP wanted magnetic breaks but to me this reel is just easier to use for crankbaits and has been trouble free.  

 

If not, the next would be a Daiwa Tatula SV TW, followed by the Abu Garcia Winch.

Lews tournament pro with externally adjustable centrifugal brakes. Turn the dial like magnets but works way better. $139 at Sportsmans outfitters. You cannot buy a better reel for the money.if you're shore fishing your not pulling deep cranks so a 6.8 or 7.5 gear should be ok.

Umm, find a new reel guy or order bearings yourself. It's not a bad job and you'll save $$.

Which bearing? A spool bearing is super easy to replace and is a DIY job that can be done for 1/3 that price. I just replaced both spool bearings in an abused 100B Chronarch for about $25 with nice ceramic bearings.

Yeah if you get a Boca bearing kit for tatula type R which is 57 bucks(3 bearing), way too over kill IMHO.

 

Now the problem is which bearing that busted? The save way and more efficient way is to get two stainless steel bearing (ABEC 5 is more than enough), one for palm size plate 3x10x4, and one under cast control knob 3x8x4?. The one under cast control knob required you to take the whole handle side plate out to get to bearing.

BTW I’m not sure about size of bearing under cast control knob since I sold my Tatula Long time ago.

you know what I think I have 3x8x4 and 3x10x4 bearing, if you want it. Let me check tomorrow to confirm.

I’m unsure which exact bearing blew, but it’s in the body of the reel. I can shake the reel and hear it rattling around inside. It’s difficult to crank, if that clears anything up. I’ve never had a bearing blow before. 
 

Frankly, I was a little apprehensive about doing it myself in fear of doing more harm than good. But if it’s as easy as it’s being alluded to, I might give it a shot.

How to you know it is a bearing making the noise?

Contact site sponsor DVT for a quote. Bearings are easy to change and general reel service will have the Tatula R working better then new. None of the reels suggested are a upgrade for what you have.

I’m just assuming it’s a bearing, I guess. It happened on a cast, and hasn’t been banged around or mistreated otherwise. Seemed like the most likely scenario. 

How old is it? Might be worth contacting Diawa directly if it's been taken care of and happened during normal use. That's not something that should be happening.

If it is binding when reeling, it's likely a gear issue, in my experience. Let him get hands on at DVT and he will make that thing better than new.

Just like @Drew03cmcmentioned main gear and pinion gear misaligned is very possible, something or yoke broke inside and pinion gear shifted, or bearing support pinion gear or other things who knows?

You’d better stop using the reel and evaluate your alternative, the parts is not very expensive if you know where and how to fix it, but professional you might have to pay labor and part which might push you up to 60-70 or even more. 

What is the cost of brand new Tatula Ct or even Tatula 100, I’ve seen used in good condition goes as low as 80-90 and might be a better solution. 

BTW, have you open the palm side plate and made sure the magnet stay in place, or brake rotor not rubbing anywhere?

 

If it were me and if I want mag brake, I’m still gonna stay with Daiwa , otherwise a chance to try something else, let’s say SHIMANO.

2 years old. 

It's impossible to speculate what happened if the reel was functioning properly before making a cast. 

I have 3 original Tatula R's that are 7 years old and working perfectly, well made made reel. I would contact DVT and get a estimate, I believe the basic maintenance cleaning and inspection is about $35 plus any part replacement.

Daiwa basic reel warranty is 1 year or 200 hours your reel is 2 years old and past it's warranty period. You can contact Daiwa service and discribe the problem, they have good product support availble.

DVT used to give a 10% discount to bassresource members.  Probably still does, but it wouldn't hurt to check first.  The Type R is a nice reel.  Well worth repairing as Mike will also give it a thorough cleaning.  Probably work better when you get it back than it did new.

 

Continuing to turn the handle could make things worse..and more expensive to repair...depending on the problem.

there are plenty of youtube videos on disassembling reels. start with that. it's good that every serious fisherman know how to fix their own reels. well, that's my opinion.

Wound up getting a Lew’s Custom Speed Spool LH 7:1. Took it for a spin today and I’m pleased. I think I’ll still get my Tatula repaired.
