What line for blade baits?

Featured Replies

Jigging blade baits and spoons in deep, clear water, getting hooks tangled in 12# fluoro..  What's a better line to avoid this?

Hmmm, in clear water I always use a fluoro leader in 8-12# but rarely throw spoons.

Is it possible that it's due to the memory coil from spinning rod or you using a baitcaster?

I don't use straight Fluoro in spinning reels because of its memory.

I usually use 8 or 10 pound mono or fluoro.  The key for me in keeping the blade baits from tangling is keeping your line taut even on the fall.

Personally, I’d look closer at your jigging cadence, how fast you’re dropping your rod tip, and which hole position you are using on the blade bait before I questioned the line choice in this case.

I fish 10 - 12 lb  mono & fluorocarbon for BB & spoons. If I'm hanging on the hooks alot it's typically my technique causing it. But sometimes fishing around wood and rocks when the spoon lands on them and hangs completely vertical and upside down it will hook on the line. Most of the time I can bump my rod just in front of the reel with the side of my fist and it'll fix it. I also fish a baitcasters in 8.0:1 that helps fix the problem quickly.

If you're vertical jigging, you're allowing slack in the line as the bait falls and/or you are popping the bait off the bottom, not jigging it.  I vertical jig blade baits with 10lb braid and don't have this problem.

I use 10# braid with 7' of 8# fluro and as others have stated you should keep as much slack out of your line as possible on the fall which is when most of your strikes will occur.  I fish spoons the same way it's all about the cadence and the amount of slack in your line.

I use 10 lb braid with a mono leader connected with a small swivel. I usually use maxima ultragreen in 10, 12 or 15 lb depending on bottom type. Stiff mono works well for the fouling problem. Braid helps with sensitivity & transmits a fouled bait. Some fouling comes with the type of bait & jigging motion & happens for everyone.
