I think the ima skimmer worked hard with long pause between strokes

 

Megabass Megadog glides nicely. 

Second the Lunker Punker...8” Wood probably had the longest glide of anything I’ve thrown...never got a bite on one though

Like QuarryMan, I love the Ima Skimmer but its big brother, the Ima Lillte Stick pencil popper glides much longer.   Great walking bait in the wind because it causes quite a ruckus.

OK... let me rephrase that: mass, momentum, length, and taper.

A Sammy 115 is a normal sized lure that has a wide walk.  The Punker is a big bait, but has a really wide walk.  Plastic Punkers can be found reasonably priced.

I looked at the Punker's and saw the original wood ones! Outta my league.

 

I actually own one Sammy 115. I bought it a few years back, at your suggestion actually. But it sat almost vertically tail down in the water, meaning I'd have to keep it moving to keep it walking. I like a long glide and a pause. Oooooo! Yes, tis still winter here. I have some Sammy knock-offs that I ended up modifying to get them to sit just nose up, and they can put on a long glide and pause. So far, I'm using the Zara Jr here. Some of those glide better than others.

Actually, it may be more about the rod and the amount of slack line that gives any walking bait it's glide action. A Zara One Knocker Spook can be made to glide well also. I like a shorter 5'6 to 6' rod, with a pistol grip or short handle. A composite rod works good, with some tip flex. I've tried some different walking baits, but still think it's more about the slack line, rod manipulation that makes these lures glide well

That's how it's supposed to work.  I only pause it when a fish misses.

Paul Roberts, you might do a search on Charlie Cambell of Forsythe Mo. He still uses composite rods, mono line, and round ABU reels. He made his reputation fishing a Spook years ago. He's old school with his tackle, but one of the best Zara Spook fisherman around. Zell Rowland is very good also

That's what I figured. I have like to pause mine.

I actually think the tail down at rest contributes to the wider walk, and the ease with which it walks.  A sammy has a different rhythm than a standard spook type.  Didn't mention it, but whatever the two treble hook Super Spook baits are, they are really good walkers as well.

Cast my vote for length, weight and balance. I’d speculate longer length means longer keel which would create a more defined glide path. Increased weight means increased inertia, which should translate into longer glide time. Finally, better horizontal balance means more lateral movement for the same amount of effort since the bait doesn't first have to be brought horizontal, or fight tail gravity and drag. Which exact bait fits those criteria...I have no idea ?

Off topic but I wanted to say I'm eager for a new video Paul...winters getting long here and I'm getting bored...time to learn something!

Glad to hear your on the mend..luckily my household has stayed flu free so far knock on wood... my girlfriend works as a childcare provider and it's been bad there with kids and staff
