Medium light rod/Reel size?

Featured Replies

So I bought a a 30 size spinning reel and was wondering if I can use it on a medium light rod or if it will be too big.

Should be fine..

Should be fine - one of my two ML rigs has a 30 size.

Won't know until you try it. For me, spinning reels/rod combos have more leeway in balancing because I can grip the spinning reel foot many different ways.

I have a Daiwa Revros LT 2000 on my 6'9 UL panfish rod and it balances perfect.

I may be the minority here but balance with a spinning reel is almost a non factor for me.

Larger spinning reel = less line twist so a size 30 would be my pick over a 25.

What rod length? That's the only deal for me...but for bass I prefer a size 30 or bigger

?Should be fine. Whats important to me is retrieve speed, in inches per turn (IPT). Most reels in the 2000 up bracket have good IPT. It's when you get down into UL reels that they may get slow on you.

Another thing I look for is spool diameter. Wider spools tend to cast further than smaller spools. This has been offset quite a bit by the advent of braids though. It becomes esp important though when using mono's of higher diameters.

Should work perfectly. The best ML I found is the Bass Pro Micro Lite Graphite Spinning rod. This is an all around rod. I’ve used it from trout to panfish to crappie to large & smallmouth bass. This rod should be way more money. It’s an amazing rod. You won’t be disappointed!

Just got this rod today in 8 ft med. light for float and fly . You think a 2500 series reel would be good for this rod?

  • Super User

Ya, a 2500 would work just fine for that.

I personally like 1000 size for ML and L rods...keeps the weight of the rig down. My Ned/DS rig is 9.58oz total without line

30 = 3000?

I use a 1000 on my med light.  but physically I dont find much size difference from some of my 2500's.

If it's a Pflueger...no. Pflueger sizes are 'wonky'

20 = 500

25 = 1000

30 = 2500

35 = 3000

40 = 4000 (only one that 'lines up')

Kinda like old Irish - which had only 18 letters...so it results in a number of allophones.

One example - there is no 'V' in the old Irish alphabet - to get the sound you have a 'BH' in the spelling...slender allophone depending on the vowels each side. Different vowels, it's pronounced 'W' (no W in old Irish either) as a broad allophone.

Ya, it's a fun language...
