I saw a recommendation online to spray a coat of clear coat spray paint on hardbaits 

right when you get them so the lure paint/designs won’t fade or come off.

thoughts?

You definitely want a quality protective coat over your paint...something as durable as possible.  I havent painted a bait in a few years, but when I was most folks were using Devcon 2-ton epoxy or a product like Dick Nite's lure coat.  

Hard as Nails clear nail polish from Walmart if you need a fast coating.

 

I use Hard as Nails over the orange spot nail polish dot on my crankbaits when the orange nail polish dries.

 

Only problem I have encountered are the funny looks the women in the area give me as I look for the correct colors and clear coat. OK, maybe it is because I am wearing a dress and a wig.

I use hardasnails on my hair jigs. Im just getting into crankbait making, would hard as nails be sufficiene for clear coating while i figure out everything else thwt goes in. Guessing my first few paint jobs arent going to be very spectacular anyway. I also have some jb weld 5 min epoxy, will this work?

Don't buy fingernail polish buy yourself!I had another guy ask me out on a date while buying fingernail polish at CVS. Now I make my wife our daughter go with me.

Are you asking about hand-made hardbaits, or the ones you purchase from manufacturers?

I’m talking about hardbaits you’d buy from a store. The only reason I’m looking into purchasing a clear coat is so I don’t have to always rebuy hardbaits because the colors/patterns get taken/rubbed off after catching 2 decent fish lol. I hear people always use the Devcon 2 ton epoxy (5 minute dry, 30 minute dry etc.) but people complain about how it starts to yellow your Baits after a while. I’ve researched on clear coats and saw KBS clear diamond coat is great for coating hardbaits (no yellowing). I’m also wondering if you do put coating on a hardbaits, will the coating mess up the baits action in the water?

p.s being a 14 year old kid in the nail polish selection at a store wouldn’t turn out so good. Imagine locking eyes with a store employee. Lol

Here's an easy way to put a protective coating on your lures. Remove the hooks and tape up the lip before you spray. One or two light coats will be enough and it won't change the action of the bait. It will also help prevent hook rash.

 

 

Some of my best baits are scratched up. Keep fishing with them. Fish don’t care near as much about it as you do. I coat my homemade baits with Devcon. Stay away from the 5 minute stuff. It does tend to yellow. I’d be afraid a heavy topcoat would ruin the action on many baits. 

Don’t bother.  There is no aerosol finish that you can shoot on a lure that is anywhere as tough as the factory finish.  Most will begin to peel off quickly.  Some will even ruin the factory finish.  The ones that work require equipment, skill and/or money to apply and are not for the casual user.  Also, any way you change a crankbait, even just adding a coating, changes how the bait works. Maybe it gets better.  Most changes hurt a bait’s action though.  Just tie the bait on and HOPE so many bass bite it that it looks messed up.  Then keep throwing it until its action stops catching bass or you lose it.  Nothing is foreve4.

What´s the factory finish anyway, what do they use? All the baits from factory are incredible tough, can you help, would be nice, thank you
