How do I make a practice plug?

Featured Replies

I need to work on my casting and my birthday is coming up soon and I am going to buy a baitcaster combo. How do I make a practice plug to practice casting?

I hope this is in the right place to post this...

Best thing to do is buy a 1/2oz casting weight (baitcaster) or 1/4 oz (spinning). These are the bell shaped waits with a loop or swivel on one end to tie line to. You can also take a piece of dowel rod about 3-4 in long and screw and eyelet screw into one end to tie to.

Search for Eagle Claw Rubber Casting Practice Plugs online. Relatively cheap.

Last time I was in Ollies they had them for $0.99.

Take the hooks off an old top water bait.

I like an old jig. Put the intended trailer on and everything. Casts just like the real thing, LOL. The practice plugs don't and I found out that I can't see the practice plug in the air very well...or at all.

Ok if the hook is still on you can't real the jig back through the lawn very well but I don't care...especially for the type of cast I'm likely to be practicing.

I simply use a bank sinker of the desired weight, but if your looking for something

with the same air resistance as your fishing plug, just remove the treble hooks.

I did this with a hair jig for my 4yr old. Cit the hook where the lead started. I got tired of dodging hooks

I would suggest using a tube bait Texas rigged with a bell sinker do the desired weight, usually 1/4, 3/8, or 1/2.

By the way, I insert the bell sinker inside the tube bait
