Favorite lure for your favorite techniques

Featured Replies

1) Top water- I am addicted to any top water blow up. The strike pro swing pop takes the cake for my favorite on this one because the action is like no other.  I have recently started getting some good action on the whopper ploppers and yozuri 3DB poppers as well.

2) T-Rig: Craws and five inch senko style worms. There’s just something about bottom fishing plastics and the articulation in the action. Googan baits has been pretty sweet lately with their Krackin Kraws and lunkerlogs working well. I suggest looking into the brand if you haven’t yet.

3) Crankbaits- oddly enough, the clearance bin at my local BPS has a lot of good cranks For pretty much a couple dollars each. Lipless, shallow, and deep diving cranks In these bins catch more fish than any of my rapala cranks in the category.

Sometimes it just happens that way. About 10 years ago, a BPS ad ran in Bassmaster magazine for 5 lures for $5. I remember when i received the lures with their chrome hooks i thought they were garbage. One day out fishing I decided to give the lipless a shot. The white bass where just smashing that yellow black lipless crankbait and I probably caught a good 20 or so fish in less than 2 hours. I eventually lost it and threw every other lure i had out there but couldn't manage even 1 more fish.

Topwater: Whopper Plopper

T-Rigged Plastic: Too many to list but Senkos and Zoom Lizards

Crankbaits: Lucky Craft CB series and Megabass Deep-X

All time favorite: Megabass Vision 110.  Fish just smash this thing.  It is the funnest lure for me to fish.

I am working with a few spinners and jigs myself trying to break into techniques.

At first my wife was telling me “why pay more for the same thing when you can get them cheaper?” I told her there was a reason these were in the clearance bin. As soon as I tied on the first green lipless crank I ate those words...

Jig-homemade 1/2oz flipping jig. Looks similar to a Terminator flipping jig.

Bladed jig-homemade 3/8oz

Jerkbait-6th Sense Provoke 106, Strike King 300, or Duo Realis Rozante 77

Spinnerbait-War Eagle 1/2oz white with gold or copper blades

jig--pure poision 3/8 pro model flipping jigs. skip like a champ and durable as they come, routinely catch 50-60 fish before i retire one. really hard to get these guys hung up

bladed jig--3/8 jackhammer w rage swimmer or keitech paddletail. speaks for itself

crankbait--dt-6, bandit 200 series, spro little john, shad rap, 6xd. all dependant on time of year and the action the fish want

plastics--zman anything, 3/16th shaky headz. really any ball jighead with a collar works great and keeps your plastics standing up

4 inch Biwaa Armored Craw on a 1/8 oz Ned rig for skipping under docks.  This thing is a blast to skip - instead of bouncing off the water a half dozen times on its way to the target like most light lures, it smoothly water skis unlike any other lure I’ve thrown.  Not only looks cool, but does not spook skittish fish in tight quarters.  Fun and effective too - -

To name just one, I'd have to say a 5" Senko wacky rig. When it's on, every time you flip that bait out near structure you can almost guarantee the line is going to start moving and there's a bass on the hook. I think deep-down I'm much more of a finesse, soft plastic angler than I am tossing crankbaits, spinnerbaits, etc. non-stop. I find it relaxing, challenging and a helluva lot of fun seeing that line start to move, reeling in the slack and Bam!
