Who still uses a Non-Slip Loop Knot?

Featured Replies

Is it just for top water lures or should I use it on finesse swimbait jigs too?

I use the rapala knot which falls in that category when I need such a loop. So yes, when needed.

On swimjigs or hard crank baits?

My uncle Jake.

@Eddie101, I still use a Rapala Loop Knot on my topwater and jerkbaits. I just think it helps impart a little more action to the lure...

Rapala loop knot isn't a strong knot to start with, maybe 60% line strength if tied properly. The Perfection loop knot is far stronger but more difficult to tie on multi hook lures.

I think you have that backwards.  The perfection loop is a pretty weak loop knot at like 40-50% and most tests have the rapala as the highest loop knot.

The problem is the line breaks at the loop.

I agree the perfection loop isn't a good knot for mono, FC or Copoly  line under 20 lb test, I use on 20 to 100 lb test for live bait tuna fishing.  Rapala knot is horrible IMO.

I like to use on cranks that don’t already have a split ring or duo lock snap on their nose (like some rapalas and hence the rapala knot).

I just threw a swim jig (fish body with jig head) for the first time last week. It didn’t even occur to me to use it, lol. I can see now that it might help with the action but I really didn’t notice anything bad with direct tie. I’ll be observing that next time.

I went the simple route on all my cranks/jerks. If it had a split-ring already, replaced with Owner Oval ring...no split ring, add an Owner Oval ring. Then just use my regular terminal knot.

Why oval?

With a round-ring, the line can slip into where the ends are...and possibly cut the line. With the oval-ring, the ends are along the long side, so slippage is much less a problem.

Back in the day when BASS put on winter seminars and I went to one at the BPS Store in Springfield, MO, Shaw Grigsby was there and I asked him what his favorite loop knot was and he responded the King Sling.  It is a challenge to tie and I don't always get it right the first time, but I think that it is a very strong loop knot.

If I know I'm going to be throwing a lure that works better with a loop knot ( like a Pop-R or a Sammy ), I will double up the line and tie the King Sling with a doubled up line.  Once you get that knot right, you have a very strong loop that will last all day.

Me too. That rapala knot is for the “hey dummy, you forgot to put on a split ring” moments.

One of the inherent problems with a standard round split ring, especially when using line with a thin diameter, like FC, mono or light braid, is that the line itself can & does slip around the ring and end up positioned/locked in the 'space' where the ring separates.

The ends of the round split ring may not be smooth, might even be a little pointed or sharp.

This can fray & even cut the line either from simple where and or a heavy load.

The oval and pear shaped split rings at the line tie seem to reduce the lines propensity of slipping into the rings slot.  Won't say it doesn't happen, just that it certainly happens less.

I use them almost exclusively.

I don't like to manage risk, I am a big fan of coming as close as I can to eliminating it.

btw - I never use a loop not.

I use a Rapala knot for one lure, that lure is an original floating Rapala. ( imagine that.) A floating Rapala doesn't come with a split ring, and the smaller sizes don't seem to work well with one added.  I'm not a big fan of the knot, just haven't found a loop knot I like better.   I use a perfection loop for live bait hooks but realize it isn't the strongest knot, but is plenty strong for most of my live bait fishing.  I also use the perfection loop when I want to add a little action to a streamer fly with leader 20 pound test or more.

Would like to learn to tie a stronger loop knot that works well with lighter line.  Appreciate any suggestions.

Look at King Sling knot video posted on this page above. New knot to me but has double line loop.
