10# mono on baitcaster.

Featured Replies

Been thinking about spooling my M/H moderate fast bait casting set up with 10# mono. Good or bad idea? Fishing ponds only.

Should be fine.look at the line diameter not just the lb. some 10lb will be the same as 12lb

Works fine for me but I don't fish thick weeds, mostly open water.

That’s what I have on one of my reels. Should be fine (the mono) for small to medium cranks and jerk baits with light to no cover. Or even senkos with a non super hook.

10 lb would be fine. I fished with 10 lb mono on my old Chronarch for about 2 years. I wouldn't fish it in heavy cover though.

Most bait casting reels will easily cast 8 lb/.010D mono/Copoly/ FC line.

I use 10 lb line as my standard size for bait casting to get maximum casting distance in clear water deep rock structure lakes.

no reaon to go small diameter line in a pond unless it's highly pressured clear water with sparse cover.

I have 12 lb YZH on my baitcasters. It casts well and I have no issues with it on topwaters, spinnerbaits or T rigs.

Works great with smaller cranks, though I prefer a M-MF.

Bring a lure retirever.  Preferably one with chains on the front.  Otherwise, you should be fine.

Thanks for the input guys. I went out fishing yesterday to try it out. I was really impressed by the performance. I actually prefer it over the 30 pound braid I had on it before. Besides, the ponds that I fish have very sparse cover. Snags are minimal. And yes they are VERY pressured.

I've loaded Maxima 6lb on all my baitcasters for 20+ years.  One break off in all that time.  I hooked in to something that almost jerked my rod out of my hand.  I had the drag way too tight.  I guess I'm too dumb to know I'm doing it wrong.  (I'm not talking heavy cover).

10lb mono worked for me for years on at least half of my bait casters and I loved the stuff.

I run 10# Stren Original on my President BC - not an issue so far.

10 lb Maxima is my go to mono, YZ hybrid is right there with it.

I've been using 8# mono or co-polymers on my Medium & Medium Light power (baitcast) rods since I got back into fishing 11 years ago.  You make be feel much better about wanting to use 6# on several rods.  Maybe even 4# on one (a Light power).  I used 4# on spinning reels for years with no problems.

10lb line is perfectly castable on a BC and definitely strong enough for bass fishing in open water, but I'd be worried about breaking it off on a hookset with a MH rod unless it's a crankbait rod.

I was always afraid of the smaller diameter would dig into itself. I grew up using 14lb mono and above.

I don’t think I recall mono ever digging in. I’ve gone as low as 6# on a Calcutta.

I've run 8 - 10 lb test mono on my pixy for long time with no digging issues.   My pixy is almost 17 year old.  I've run 10 lb on a couple Lews TPs and no issues.    The issue issue is using the wrong tool for the job.  10 lb will work in bait cast gear, just make sure your not trying to use it in super heavy cover.

Great, I just ordered a new reel yesterday, will grab some 10 lb line when i pick it up at Cabelas.

It is a crank bait rod. ?

Horses for courses.

10 lb test mono on a baitcaster is about as normal as it gets in my area. . . . . for cranking. That's what I caught my PB on using a Poe's crankbait. I still use 10 lb mono for cranking. That's about the heaviest for anything but things like Alabama rigs and swimbaits.

Always had a couple baitcasters rigged with 6 lb mono for plastic worm fishing too, LOL (now, it's more like braid with 8 lb fluorocarbon leader).

Then, one spinning rod with 6 lb mono would round out my arsenal for most fishing days (which is now at least two spinning rods with 10 lb braid and 8 lb fluoro leader).
