Preferred Reel for Spinnerbaits and Bladed Jigs

Featured Replies

Anyone using a 7:1 reel for this or is something in a lower gear ratio preferred?

My prime reel for this is a Pflueger Supreme in 7.1:1 (29IPT), my secondary is a Pflueger President XT in 7.3:1 (31IPT)...I like around 30IPT for moving baits for when I want to burn them...I can always slow my cranking down for slow-rolls, harder for me to speed up my reeling.

I use a 7.x gear ratio reel for throwing spinnerbaits/chatterbaits.

Either 6:1 or a 7:1.  I use alot of heavier compact spinner baits.  I like a 1/2 bait in a 3/8 or 1/4 size.

I don't care for a very high speed reel, but I also don't like a slow reel either.  Something around 28-30 IPT is comfortable for me.  This usually means a 6.x:1 reel.  In rare occasions when I really need to burn it, I've jumped up to a 33 IPT reel.

anything 7:1 or higher is used for low drag or vertical baits.

spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, crankbaits etc. I use 6.3:1.

baits with a lot of drag wears out my wrist with high ratio reels.

I'm using a 7.something:1 for almost everything baitcasting. The one rod I don't have a high speed reel on is just because it's an old reel I haven't cycled out. I should. BTW, I almost never deep crank.

Spinner baits on a Curado 200E7 7.0:1 and blade (chatter baits) on Curado 200I HG 7.2:1. No deep thinking on using either one.  I just initially set them up that way and it works for me and never changed it.

I fish a spinnerbait a ton. I have tried lots of options in reels and speeds. I have settled on a Daiwa Tatula SV in a 6.3:1 ratio. I really appreciate the SV when using a bigger bladed spinner bait in the wind. It also gives me more accurate and easier casts when throwing lighter spinnerbaits. The ratio is nearly perfect as I can slow down and slow roll near bottom or speed up for a burning retrieve.

I also use like this reel for my bladed jig baits as the SV really simplifies skipping these baits under docks and low tree limbs. Again, the 6.3:1 ratio is near perfect for the same reasons as the spinnerbait. Skipping a Jackhammer is a joy with the SV reel.

E7 Curado and 7.4 Curado DC

7.x will work perfect for bladed jigs and spinners. Lowest I would go is 6.x.

My favorite is a 6 speed Curado K.

5.?:1 to 6.?:1? will retrieve my spinnerbait 21" - 25" per handle revolution... perfect.

6:3 for both..

I use identical 6.3 Tatula SV's on both my spinnerbait and bladed jig rods.

Curado k 7.4:1, I find this gear ratio a nice middle ground that is versatile for most techniques. Easy to slow down or speed up as needed.

7:1 ish retrieve is what I use.  I use a Tatula SV TW for chatterbaits because I do occasionally skip one.  I have switched all other lighter/higher profile lures to Tatula Elite (Spinnerbait, buzz bait, jerk bait, hair jig).  I don't skip those lures and the elite launches them farther/better than anything I've ever used.  You either get far more distance - or you can cast easier, get the same distance as the SV TW, and prevent your tennis elbow from returning ;)  Truly a rocket-launcher...

Curado DC in a 6 speed. Casts like dream on a Fury 734c.

Chatterbait - Tatula Elite in 7.x - I don't skip them, so I'll take the extra distance from the Elite over the SV. Probably not earth-shattering, but often I'm trying to cover a lot of water/weeds with a chatterbait, so the low effort long distance is a win.

Spinnerbait - SV TW (2020) in 6.x or 7.x - no strong preference, but on the margin probably a 7x as I'm moving everything to that except the crankbait rod at 6.x and the jig rod at 8.x (mostly used for pitching vs dragging) - in those cases I get some utility from the difference. And like mentioned above, the SV spool is nice in the wind with big blades or on smaller/lighter baits. On everything else I prefer the consistency of retrieve no matter what I pick up. And even still if I had to rebuy everything I'd probably just do a 7.x and be done with it.
