I mention closing the bail in this video about preventing line twist, plus more tips that are often overlooked.

Leaving Star Trek GIF

I removed the automatic closer on a couple of my reels.  I hope my buddy, who always reels to close the bail, doesn't pick them up.

I prefer manually closing the bail of my spinning reels.

manually... AND... pull the line slightly to tighten it on the spool

Couldn’t have said it better and the tightening step is crucial in preventing loops on the spool too.

I might have a line twist issue maybe once in every 4-500 casts, yup might. As for the loop, only if I forget to tighten the line, lol but it too is rare.

Ok. I have to point out something. Not sure where this piece of bad data came from, but, however you close the bail, it has absolutely nothing to do with line twist. Doesnt cause it, doesnt prevent it. No cause and effect relationship between bail closing and line twist.

Closing the bail by hand, does help prevent loops from forming on the spool.

I manually close the bail.  Puts less wear and tear on the reel.

i just flip the handle..and i just had to clear out the mother of all knots.  my friend was, "did you just backlash a spinning reel"..just to mess with me.

i'll retrain my brain.  thanks for this.
