Help With Scrounger Rigging

Featured Replies

I bought several of the Jenko Tennesse River Tremors last year but didn’t fish them. Want to give them a try this year. I noticed these have a cross lock snap on them, while other brands don’t. Is the snap necessary to the baits action or can you tie directly to the eye?

Thanks....Joe

I tie directly to the eye and remove the snap. The reason is I prefer a tighter wiggle and less wobble. Tried lots of different trailers with the old 6” Sluggo or straight tail types works good for me.

Like Tom, I tie direct to the scrounger. I have had decent luck with fishing flukes that way.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but taking a step back...can someone fill me in on when I would fish a scrounger head versus a regular jig or swimbait head? Obviously scroungers are big on TN river lakes, and I just started fishing KY Lake last year, but they were new to me and I've never used them. I understand that they give the bait more action, just wondering when I should go with one rather than a regular head.

Yup, me too^^^.  However, I use a loop knot (the one Mark Rose uses).  I like the scrounger any time of the year, but particularly late spring through fall.  It can be fished any level in the water column, and will sometimes get bit when other presentations don't.

Ajay has been in my  tacklebox.

*Good comments Tom - try the snap / non snap rigging methods  on the TR Tremors and see what works best for you . Zoom Regular Flukes (4") in Pearl White or Shad colors are a good starting point for trailers .

Bill length plays alot into the action. I tune most all of mine to run the way I like based on the trailer attached. I use my Norman Speed Clips and attach to a small Spro swivel connected to a split ring. Depending on the trailer used, could cause the scrounger to spin on retrieve and will wreak havoc on your line. The Hog Farmer 5.25" Spunk Shad is a more subtle action and rolls little to none. I prefer the Strike King Blade Minnow, but the bill needs to be shortened and thinned to prevent rolling/spinning.

I typiccally only run the heavier than 1/2 ounce heads and fish them deep (15'+). Less than 15' and Chatterbait or boot tail swimbait is my choice.

Also works great for Stripers and Hybrids when they are chasing suspended bait in late fall/winter. When specifically targeting Stripers, I will whip some white bucktail and a few strands of mylar with some red thread just behind the bill and use a Hog Farmer Spunk Shad and count it down or Livescope it to depth and work fast through a school.

The Blade Minnow definitely likes to be worked slower.

Those are just my two choices of baitfish imitating trailers....tons of things work well. Magnum white trick worms have done well for me too. Its something they are not used to seeing and has pulled the LM on heavy Spotted Bass waters like Lake Hartwell.
