Nose rigged fluke more stout dropshot hook (Casting rod)

Featured Replies

I've really enjoyed doing the cps in the nose of a fluke with a drop shot hook. I do plan to fish them on a lighter rod but sometimes the cover calls something a little heavier. Any recommendations on a drop shot hook for nose hooking that's a little more stouter?

Owner Jungle weedless wacky hook.

Tom

The Owner Sniper Finesse has become my go to for Drop Shot, Neko, Nose Hooked Flukes and Wacky rigging.

I use #2 for Drop Shot and a #1 for everything else.

There is a weedless version too.

Gamakatsu Octopus Circle Hook #6

On topic but sort of off topic, what's the advantage to nose hooking it over on an EWG? Ive always fished Flukes weedless on an EWG, but if I can improve on something I sure will!

From my understanding bass almost always eat a fluke nose first.  With the nose hook to me it's about its action and hook up ratio. A bise hooked fluke from what I've seen so far has fantastic action and you aren't going to miss bites with that little exposed hook.

Weather you use a worm, like 4 or 6" rboworm, or a fluke type bait, nose hooking allows that bait to have more action, as you don't have a hook running through the body as in t rigging it. I use either a octopus or circle hook 99% of the time. Never had a bass come unbuttoned.

...such as a Texas rigged fluke.  Why keep pounding on that square peg?

The entire point is its a my casting rod. Most drop shot hooks are likely to bend out. I want to power fish a nose hooked fluke, not have to baby them.

The nose hook Fluke Stick Jr. has been a secret weapon on Lake Hartwell since it came out. Patrick Walters used the technique to win the B.A.S.S. Eastern Open back in Sept. 2020.

I like throwing the Donkey rig. The mainline will be a Sniper Finesse #1 hooked thru the Fluke Stick Jr. with an Owner centering pin for added strength and then I have a Super Fluke on an EWG on the sliding leader. The nose hooked Fluke Stick sticks them 4 to 1. As in they eat the stick over the Super Fluke just a foot away. And the #1 Sniper Finesse hook pins them in the roof of the mouth 90% of the time. Landing ratio is excellent and I often need pliers to get my hook out.

I will throw the Fluke Stick Jr. nose hooked by itself on spinning gear; only to get that extra 20 foot of casting distance on spooky fish in the clearer water. This technique has proven itself on Lake Jocassee, Lake Hartwell, Lake Russell and Clark Hill (SC/GA lake chain) where I fish most.

Its a technique that give the fish something different to look at and it has been getting their attention and secretly winning T's until Patrick let the cat outta the bag with his big win. Nose hooking a bright colored magnum trick worm also works great in my area in Spring/Summer.

I will say, much of the success many of us are having with these techniques are due to Live Sonar. I would hardly ever throw some of those presentations in deep open water if I was not able to witness bass behavior in real time. Livescope has changed the way I catch, as it truly turns fishing into catching for me. Fish react totally contrary to what we thought. I watch Spots come up from 50' of water to crush a subtle soft plastic on the surface.

Gamakatsu B10 Stinger Finesse. I use these in 1/0 for wacky rigging 6" stickbaits on a MH casting rod. I use 40# braid to 12# leader and have never bent out a hook. If you're going to be nose hooking, I'd probably opt with the size 1 or 2. They have a long shank so be aware of that when choosing the right size for your rig.

My entire point...  choose the path of least resistance.  When cover becomes too heavy for exposed hook point presentations to be effective, change to a presentation that is effective in that cover.  Texas rig your fluke.

Nose hooking allows for more action and a different fall.

Sometimes fish like different things...  However, you can continue to fish your texas rigged fluke all day, every day and you will catch fish IMO.  Not as many :D but it will work.

I believe the point OE is making is that if the cover is thick enough that you feel the need to horse a fish out you are not going to be in a situation that an open point presentation is going to be your best option, I doubt he is saying abandon the dropshot forever, just that for the situation the OP presented, a T-rig would be a more effective approach than trying to upsize a finesse presentation.

I see-I was trying to make a joke about his texas rig love- I'm sorry if that came off rude.

I didn't think he was drop shotting the fluke and I took it like the OP wanted to know the hook for a different application.

Drop shot hook or Wide gap circle hook with a centering pin screw (CPS) screwed into the fluke and put on the hook usually no weight needed but can.

Yes, the Texas rig will be more weedless but it may not catch more fish.  I fish docks like this a lot and do quite well as it is a much different presentation that they see NON STOP and it can be quite weedless as there are now several weedless hooks out there to help with this.

In the end it is just another tool/trick/modification to help catch fish.

Found some pictures online to help show the set up (but don't tell anyone else) :D  PS. you usually do not need anything to fix the pin the the hook-  Just want to make sure it doesn't go back over the barb and fall off.

I shouldn't say you came off rude, rather, I saw it was fairly clear that you two were talking at cross purposes, these little miscommunication happen over text a lot, generally better to assume a miscommunication than foul intent is my rule, as to the pin over the hook, that's brilliant, and I have no shame at all in admitting I am stealing that time now and so saving myself a pile of cash on dropshot baits LOL
