One top water rod

Featured Replies

Hey all, I’m in the market for a top water rod. I know most people use two rods for top water. One medium for treble baits and a medium heavy for frogs and such.

Right now I’m only looking for one rod for my top water baits for a little bit as my next purchase will be a kayak and not another rod. Should I go with a medium heavy just to have the extra power or go with a medium? Would love to hear everyone’s opinions.

MH is pretty standard.

Depending on the lure and the rod manufacture a MH would work.

My personal preference is a G. Loomis 844C IMX.  This rod is labeled as Heavy but it can handle just about anything.  Granted it's not going to handle a small 1/4oz popper bait but that 3/8 - 1/2 oz zone is great and I have fished up to a 1oz Whopper Plopper with no issues.

I use Kistler's LMH.  It's a MH with a nice, soft tip, rated  1/8 - 3/4, with a mod-fast action.

Depends on what you mean by Med- Heavy.

If I had to do it with one it would be a medium heavy.  I choose not to do it with one tho.  Several of my rods help cover the top water bite, from medium spinning rod all the way to XH casting gear.

My favorite topwater rod is a Poison Adrena 6’11 M+.
