What size line?

Featured Replies

I recently purchased a heavy power casting rod and reel with a line rating of 15-30 line. I’m having planning on using braided line for the most strength, I’d just like to know what strength line to go with.

50lb or 65lb PowerPro

A lot of information to dig through here, but I would go with 40 lb braid since I have zero idea of what you plan to do with it.

Heavy go with 50lb, in case in future you can add leaders.

What are you using it for?

Responses saying 50/65 lb braid are assuming this is a pitching/heavy cover application.

Depending on what its used for, I would recommend 40. I personally don't ever use more than 50, but that's just me. Plenty of people swear by 65, I just never saw the need. I'll snap any rod I own long before 50lb braid fails.

A lot of it depends on how heavy the weeds are where you plan to cast.

If it's not too thick, you can get by with 40#, if it's thick slop then go to 50# or even 65#.

Here in MN, even the thickest weeds we get only need 50#, if you're down south where they get thicker go with the 65#.

Never go below 12 lb. Diameter !!! That's 50 lb test.

This is a dart board until our OP gives more detail

The spool capacity on the reel and how you plan to use the combo may make all the difference.

I plan on using it for frogs, and the spool capacities are 90yds-65lb, 110yds-50lb, and 130tds-40lb

This for me for most of my rods.. 3 others have 50lb . For where I live and fish works just fine .

50 is an all around size for functionality and casting. 30 if you want to get cute, 40 is you're specializing, and 65 if you think you're fishing for 15lbers out of the absolute worst slop humanely imaginable every time like too many people think.

On a heavy rod, I would probably go with 50# braid. If you're only throwing it in the thickest cover, or pairing it with a reel with fluorocarbon when not in heavy cover, then I'd go with 65# braid but 50# is the best all purpose
