Help me choose my lures for summer

Featured Replies

I have every lure imaginable. Looking for 3 baits to rely on for next month and really work with them.

I struggle with switching baits to often and not giving them enough time (before I switch to paddletail swimbait or NED and catch a bunch).

- I mostly fish neighborhood ponds - where bass are usually in the 1-2lb range.

- Half is open water, other half is grassy (no real rocks where I fish unless I creek fish).

- Not sure of water temp - live in Louisville, KY (weather will be in 85-93 for next month)

I'm looking to focus in on 1 topwater, 1 middle (moving), 1 bottom - that way I only take those 3 baits and start with moving, then go to bottom (with fishing evening topwater).

Help me out with which 3 lures I should focus on for the next month.

I'd use a senko, frog and swim jig. All 3 are good in open water and also fish well in grass. Plus the swim jig is versatile by switching trailers also the senko can be fished weightless , weighted or wacky depending on conditions and cover.

For topwater I would go with a evergreen shower blow or a heddon super spook. For mid-range I like a kvd 1.5 or a chatterbait and for bottom contact I would role with a senko or a rage bug.

I think you are on the right track. Take all that stuff out of the boat and leave it home. Put yourself together a nice little care package of a few sizes and color of worms/soft plastics, couple of natural pattern  crankbaits to cover the water column you fish (throw in a firetiger or chart. w/ black bk.), a topwater or two, couple jigs & trailers and a spinnerbait and have at it. All that stuff is too much for you to grab at. Cuts down all your options and builds confidence in what you brought.

Bottom-Tokyo Rig.  They come through grass like a T rig and they keep the bait just out of the slimy bottom of ponds.

Middle-Swim a jig.  If you use the right jig you can pitch, swim, skip and drag it to find where the bite is.

Top-Go with a with a frog

Spook or popper

Shallow running crankbait or spinnerbait

Jig and craw, or plastic worm

I am doing this same thing right now - focusing the last couple weeks on fishing mainly

Senko

Swim Jig

Whopper Plopper

unless it is a night trip, then i always throw a black spinnerbait and magnum uv speed worm

Good choice. I might consider a chatter bait in place of the swim jig and I might try to sneak a Ned Rig in there if they let me have a fourth bait.
