Bass jumping out of the water, what to use? (small pond)

Featured Replies

Hi everyone

yesterday i was able to go to an old abandoned rock quarry to do some fishing. I on the first cast, my friend landed a fish using a T-rigged trick worm (pumpkin red). That was the only fish we caught. We saw a few fish striking the surface, some were able to jump high enough that most of their body was visible. I tried a zoom horny toad on the surface but nothing happenned.

I'm not sure what insects are hatching during august in SW Ontario, Canada, but the fish were after something.

In a case like this, what is a good bait to use on spinning tackle?

You can use anything but being the bass you see are close to the surface , a suspending jerkbait might do the trick .

The old classic Rapala balsa minnow twitched on top would be an option along with about a thousand other lures lol

I went on a soft plastic shopping spree, and never thought to grab one of those!

Thanks, the closest thing i have to a jerkbait right now is a super fluke, but I will look for a good jerkbait to get

Are you familiar with the bait monkey? Regardless I can tell you that you and him is gonna be good pals ?

Let me guess, when the wife asks, i will blame the large visa bills on this monkey?

While im posting, would these be suitable?

The monkey won’t mind… I wouldn’t recommend either of those 2 lures even though I have both of those lures (bait monkey problem) but I do have between 300-400 of those Rapala I mentioned (bait monkey problem) there is plenty of reading on here and recommendations. Rapala original floater or a Husky Jerk might have got bit that day, might not have.

Of the two you posted the BPS looks better . The ripplin Red Fins are kind of big .

Weightless Super Fluke on a 5/0 hook would have been my first choice. Try it and you’ll see what I mean.

Keitech 4” Swing Impact, weightless. Or TxRigged with a 2g bullet weight and mini bead, if  needed to cast.

I haven't had good luck with BPS XPS suspending baits. They don't suspend. I use cheaper baits a lot but I have some Smithwicks for jerks. They aren't too expensive.

Don’t bash me lol, but I have had more success with a Googan Scout suspending jerkbait than any other. It stays suspended well, has great action and the sharpness of the hooks really surprised me.
