Louis Wienecke
I'm in North Florida and have been happy here, but my son and his family have moved to Chapel Hill and want me nearby (within 30 or 40 minutes at the outside). I don't know where the best fishing would be for a plug caster like me. I might look at Farriington for the north end of Lake Jordan (or Jordan Lake) or Apex or another town for the south end. Or are lakes to the north of Chapel Hill better to target. Some advice would be appreciated.

Super User the reel ess Posted September 3, 2021 Super User Share Posted September 3, 2021 Welcome. I'm from the piedmont of SC. I can't speak about the lakes near Chapel Hill. But Badin and Tuckertown are two nice lakes within driving distance. I've fished there with my uncle and we were usually one of very few boats on the lake. Development is very restricted on Badin. Super User whitwolf Posted September 3, 2021 Super User Share Posted September 3, 2021 Welcome from Morganton NC! Apex puts you within driving distance of Falls Lake, Jordan, and Sheron Harris. They are all very good fisheries. They are busy but fish well!

GRiver
Hi from the Sunshine State of Fl I used to live in Burnsville Nc., hour north of Asheville. All kinds of smallmouth fishing around there, kind of far away from Chapel Hill. Sorry can’t help you out.
Super User Darren. Posted September 10, 2021 Super User Share Posted September 10, 2021 Welcome aboard! I realize it's a wee bit outside your range, but if my wife and I had our druthers, we'd settle at Lake Gaston. But that's only because we've experienced only one other lake in NC, and that's White Lake. We're from VA, loads of lakes in the VA and NC neck of the woods. Probably hard to go wrong almost anywhere with a good lake.
Functional
For fishing that area is a nice central spot. As mentioned you have Falls, Jordan and Shearon Harris all fairly close. You also have plenty of other fishing lakes in a 1-3 hour drive that can get you just about anything the state has to offer. As for living I would personally not live in Durham but the surrounding areas can be good. Chapel hill can be pricey as can Cary and anywhere in Wake county. You will have some of the best medical facilities the state has to offer at Duke in Durham and righ by RDU airport if you travel at all. Bass Pro and Cabelas are also 30-45 min from that location.
