Please Explain Buying an Old Used Boat for a Newbie

Featured Replies

I am looking to buy a janky bass boat for a couple grand in the next few years for use in college tournaments and fun trips in the summers. Not looking for anything fancy, it just has to work! I have never owned a boat, only been a coangler. I don't know the exact model yet I am currently looking at facebook groups and I'll see whatever comes up. What do I need to be aware of from boats made over 20 years ago? Any other general tips on buying a used boat? Thanks!

The goal is to avoid buying one with a rotten transom. Usually you can grab the leading edge of the lower unit and wiggle it and watch the back of the boat for play. Also it would probably be worth buying a compression gauge and testing each cylinder on the motor. It’s always good to take someone with you that has purchased several boats or is just handy with engines in general

Most glass bass boats by the early 90’s eliminated glassed wooden transoms stringers.

If possible look for original owners that kept their boats in the garage. The condition of OB is a major issue and needs to be checked out by a OB mechanic.

Avoid any boats used in salt water.

Take your time there is always a few good condition used bass boats.

All that was said above should cover you. I would add make sure you take it for a test ride with a qualified person. Good luck and keep us posted.

Take a peek in the back where all the pumps and wiring are.

If it looks like a jumble of wires and hoses...think on it.
