Solid recommendation, but for another $10 retail you can get the exceler which has a screw in aluminum handle. I got two of them for under $60 each.

Last year I picked up a Shimano Sienna 2000, I think it is the FG as colors of reel is the same, for under 30 bucks and I have been really pleased with it. Used it for both Trout and bass fishing this year. It was listed in outdoor life as a best buy. This reel is almost making me think Shimano is an ok brand;)

Daiwa regal 3000cxh. A ton of reel for the money, always super reliable for me. Love the 6.2:1 ratio. I have three, though now I have migrated to a Fuego 6.2 as my main.

 

I do actually use the high drag rating pretty regularly in one summer spot...blue cats as big as 19lbs, gar even bigger. Both will chase bass tackle in the right conditions.

I'm still new to all of this.  Just bought my grandson the Diawa Regal and I bought the Diawa Exceler for myself.  So far we are both very happy with these reels. 

I use a Daiwa Regal LT 2500 for my Ned rig setup.  Zero complaints.

These are ALL good reels, pfluger is a doyo or banax (not sure) but a good reel,  the diawas and shimanos are smoother, IMHO, durability on the pflugers so far have been their high point, fished one weekly for 4 years no issues. Just cosmetic scuffs and scratches. (Also p.s, the grease in the pfluger is crap so if you are winter fishing and you take it out and it feels grindy it's not the reel but the grease and after a few casts it will warm up and work fine

I got a Sienna 2500 for free (using points from a company awards program. It’s on a Daiwa Procyon MXF (also free with points lol). It’s not a bad reel for the price. I also have a Daiwa Revros 2000 (on a St. Croix Bass-X MLXF) and a 2500 (on a Fenwick HMX MF). Of the three, I prefer the two Revros over the Sienna, but not enough to lose sleep over. All have AR, but the switch on the Sienna is small and awkward to locate quickly. But all three rigs have caught bass in the 4-5 lb range without a hitch, so I’m happy with all three. 

Not knocking anyone who likes and uses  them but I personally am happy not having an anti reverse switch. I’ve been fishing on and off for 40 plus years and have never once turned it off and back reeled any fish, kudos to those of you that do but I’m happier without it.  I’ve put my two cents in for reel recommendations but at $49.00 the Pfluger is one heck of a deal along with the Daiwa regal lt at $60.00 in my opinion.

I do not back reel. But I find it useful to add line length before a cast if I reel it in too close to the tip, and also comes in handy keeping tension on the line while letting line out when trying to dislodge a snagged bait. Yeah, you can simply open the bail, but I find using a reel with AR a better option.

^ What Brian said - same reasons for me.

Daiwa Fuego.  I admit I can’t remember his much my 1000 cost me, but even the 1000 hauls in bass.   I have it on my light 2-piece that I pack into distant hike in only lakes.  It’s an enjoyable reel.

I read your post, and it got me thinking that, back in the day, the rod fought the fish vs the reel. Now a lot of bass anglers look to haul the fish across the surface solely by action of the reel. You can easily bring a good-sized bass to boat or shore with a 1000 or 2000 series reel if you use the rod as nature intended!

I see the rod as the “shock absorber” for the system. 

I’m selling a 2021 Shimano nasci that I only used twice for $75 in the flea market forum and that’s exactly what I was using it for and it worked great. I can’t believe how nice it is for the price. All my other reels are higher end and this one feels on par with them. Only reason I’m selling it is because I’m addicted to vanfords.

The NASCI is a great reel.
