I’m looking for a medium/deep cranking rod for next season. I currently have a dobyns fury 7’ MH/moderate but don’t like it as much since I can’t launch strike king 5xd. I also have a 7’3” heavy/fast dobyns fury I’ve been using as a cranking rod temporarily kind of like the heavy action rod. tackle warehouse is having 20% off currently and I’ve been looking at the lews Kvd composite cranking rods. I was looking at the 7’4” heavy/moderate. Looking to stay around the $100 or so mark. What rod do you recommend and what specs? Is a fast tip better than a moderate when fishing treble hooks? 
 

is there a general rule about what action rod to use and when? Like medium heavy or heavy. Moderate tip or fast, etc 

For deep divers, you will generally want something like MH/MF. The Dobyns 705CB should be able to swing a 5XD, but not much more than that. Some MH/MF will handle a 6XD, but others will throw heavier lures like a 8XD so check the weight ratings on the rod to get some idea of what to expect.

Could try a glass rod. With the sale you could grab a Shimano Intenza Glass for around that price. I’ve never personally used the Intenza but I just bought a glass rod for exactly what you’re wanting.

      My retailer had the KVD rod that you mention on the rack. I hefted it. I'm used to heavy rods, because I use fiberglass. That rod was too heavy/unbalanced for my purposes. YMMV.      jj

 

 

Thanks for the feedback. There’s a bunch of different power and action types for rods. What a general rule for each type and when to use.

For that matter, the Tatula 7'2" MH/R Glass would do very well here. I have that rod, but didn't suggest it because it's more expensive but with a 20% off sale, it would be close.

I had a Tatula 7’3 MHF the full cork model and didn’t much care for it but I know a lot of people love them. Daiwa makes great stuff so I know it’s just me.

The 7'3" is one I do not have. I have the first gen 6'10" MH/F (and that's the best rod I ever bought under $200) and the 7'1" MH/XF for MH Tatulas and they're a bit different.

It was incredibly sensitive the main thing was it was super tip heavy paired with a Curado K. I always felt like I was having my baits fight against me if that makes sense.

Odd. I haven't found any Daiwa rod to be really too tip heavy especially compared to rods that are really tip heavy.

I have an AirdX that balances perfectly for me it was just that particular rod I’m sure. 

Take a look at swim bait rods from 7-6 to 7-11 that handle 1/2 to 3 oz baits. I have a 7-6 imx pro that handles the full range of cranks. I also have a kistler  helium M.O.D. Heavy moderate thats 7-11 & handles 3/8 to 3oz baits that also handles all crank baits. They both throw a lipless a country mile. Handle 10XD’s with everything in between and cover swimbaits as well. Very versatile rods. 

Not sure if you made your purchase yet but if you’re not in a hurry you may want to check out this Lews rod and read the description on the Lews website. It sounds like it’s exactly what you’re after.

I have that rod and I love it. I can throw a wide range of treble hook lures, and I even throw chatterbaits on it frequently. Unique grip material.

Chatterbaits are actually my main purpose for it. I throw bigger cranks very little but wanted something that could handle them better than my Fury 705cb

Cant beat the intenza for that price point $129.99 ,i just weighed mine for a buddy whose thinking about trading for some reel work and its 4.65ozs (which is very reasonable for a glass rod) the zodias is a much better rod from what ive heard from my buddies who own them but they're like $100 more ,i like the intenza a lot if i didnt just have a custom northfork composites hybrid cb rod built (3.4ozs carbon fiber grips with light duty crb lzr guides) i would be keepin the intenza

I do not fish this method, but take @Dwight Hottle ‘s advice. I have a Kistler KLX Heavy Mod that has been amazing for similar techniques in saltwater. For heavier and deeper applications these are more versatile rods than they are marketed as.
