Best Gear ratio for frog fishing

Featured Replies

Hi everyone I was wondering what is the best or most commonly used gear ratio for frog fishing

I like a fast reel, but fast is relative. A 6 speed is fast compared to what was available twenty years ago.

By fast, I mean a 7 or 8 gear ratio. On my frog rod, I have a Daiwa CR80 with 7.5:1 gear ratio. My punching rod, which also doubles as a frog rod at times, is fitted with an 8.1:1 Fuego.

I prefer an 8:1 for frog fishing.  Allows me to stay in rhythm better on the walk and helps turn their heads out of the slop as fast as possible.

I would go with a fast action, heavy power. I use a 7'4 H/F Bass X or the same rod in the Mojo series.

Ditto on the power/action in general, though my frog tossing is moving to the Fury 765FLIP...previously it was done on my 7'0" Aird-X H/F.

I also like a fast reel, an 8.1:1 on a 7' 4" H/F Falcon Bucoo SR to be exact.

7.4 Shimano Curado K

I'm also in the 8 speed camp.

I think 7 gear ratio is fine, it gives you some "speed" but you don't lose power. Personally, I've even used 6:4:1 reels for frogging and had no problems....

Whatever you got will work, in my experience you don't work a frog over grass too terribly quick, the line and rod type is most important imo to get the big hook in their mouth. I don't care for braid but this is that one instance where I use braid.

Lew’s TP-1 Black Speed Stick

7' 4" Heavy Fast

Lew's Tournament MB 7.5:1

Sufix 832 50#

OG Tatula 7'4" HF with Curado 201E7 and 60# Fins Original PRT.  Probably drop down to 50# braid next time line needs changing.  This rod stays in Florida for visits.

Bought an ALX Toadface for local fishing.  Not sure yet what reel to use on it.  But I imagine nothing slower than 7.0:1.

7.3.1 or an 8.1.1
