Boat Insurance and Lower Unit Coverage

Featured Replies

Progressive offers lower unit coverage. When I asked about it, the rep mentioned that if anything happens to the lower unit on the boat, I would be responsible for the deductible, but they would cover the rest on the lower unit repair, or a new lower unit.

I thought this was pretty cool especially if you fish waters that have submerged stumps etc. I have not destroyed a lower unit yet, but I like the idea that my policy will cover it. My full coverage on a 2021 Triton TRX patriot costs me $50/ month. I did not think that was horrible bundled in with everything else that I have.

Just wanted to share in case anyone had insurance that did not have that coverage, but may want it!

I am sure that my standard watercraft coverage already covers my outboard, which also includes my lower unit.  So I have no reason to have additional coverage on something that is already covered.

Collision deductible should cover everything.

Exactly. I called Progressive my insurer & asked if they cover damage to the motor's lower unit if you hit a rock. They told me yes its covered under collision damage minus the deductible.

Progressives Propulsion Plus: We’ll pay to repair or replace the lower unit of an outboard motor, or upper & lower units of an inboard/outboard motor if you have a mechanical breakdown. And yes, we’ll still cover it if it’s caused by general wear and tear.

At this point the insurance may be more expensive than my boat after a year, yknow... one of the tin can aluminum boats ?

I've had Progressive with all my boats and they've always treated me well. Saved me a couple different times.
