Best IPT for a deep crank/lipless setup?

Featured Replies

Looking for a reel for a deep crank/lipless setup. Using an 8' Berkley Air HMF rod. Need advice on a good IPT rate to do both.

David Fritts always said 21” per turn was ideal for deep cranking, which works out to about 5:1 gear ratio. However, he liked faster for lipless, usually around a 6.4:1 ratio. So I’d guess the compromise would fall in-between those two. I’d probably shoot for the higher end to do both, something in the 5.8 to 6.2 range depending on model/brand.

I keep separate outfits for both and use 4.8:1 or 5.1:1 for deep cranks, and either 6.2:1 or 7:1 for lipless depending on size and depth.

^ I like faster and stiffer for lipless - 29 IPT and a fast action rod

Most of my lipless are on a Supreme 7.1/Fury 703C

Heavier ones are on a Patriarch 7.1/Fury 704C

Both reels run 29 IPT

The reel I use for lipless cranks is 30 IPT, 7.2:1 ratio. I want to be able to burn it without wearing myself out, or pick up slack quickly when I'm working it on the bottom. An 8:1 would be a solid option as well.

Rod depends on the line. I like braid to mono leader for my lipless baits, so I throw them on a MH/MF to offset the braid. If I threw stretchier line, I'd go with a faster rod.

I am in the same boat and fish a faster reel with lipless.  I also do not like a moderate rod with lipless either as I am constantly ripping them off weeds.  Two completely different setups for me.  That being said, I have nothing slower than a 6 and the lipless is only pulled back on a 7.

Deep cranking and lipless crankbaits are on the exact opposite ends of the cranking spectrum. You want a 5 ratio for deep cranking and a lipless can be thrown on any medium/medium heavy rod with a 6 to 8 gear ratio. I would never consider throwing a lipless on a 5 ratio. If you want to split the difference get a 6 I guess.

This comment is why I come here. Going to split the two. Given the info, I already have a good setup for LCB. Going to focus on the deep crank. Thanks ironbjorn.

A 300 size 5 to 6:1 gear ratio for deep divers for several reasons. Larger reel has more line capacity so the IPT stays nearly constant from the end of a long cast to the of the cast.

Lower gear ratio allows the anger to over come the lures high water resistance to change retrieve speed so you don’t fatigue.

Size 100 or 200 reels work well for lures Thant are not affected by reduced IPT after making a long cast like lipless that can be retrieved effective with reels 6.3:1 to 8:1. Lipless has very low water resistance and increasing retrieve speed is simple by cranking fast without fatigue.

The smaller reels with less line capacity and diameter loses nearly 40%. of IPT regardless of gear ratio after making a longer cast over 40 yards.

You use the 300 reel size effective for both deep divers and lipless.

Deep cranking reel benefits from a lower ratio and 100 mm handle.  The Tatula 150 in 5.5 is great but so is the LEWS BB1.  I think the LEWS is on sale via TW. That would be a hard one to pass up.

Picked up a Kastking Megajaws 5.4:1. I have the 9.1:1 and love it so, I'm getting the slow one.

Ahh rocket science. LOL. Got me thinking bout my Abu C3: 5.3:1/15 max drag/24IPT. Hmmmm.
