New to Chatterbaits - O-Ring or Direct to Jig

Featured Replies

What are the advantages or disadvantages to having the blade on the jig eye or having the o-ring between the two?  Action different?  One have a different purpose than the other?  Thanks for any and all information.

If I am not mistaken, the blade starts vibrating earlier in the retrieve when it is directly on the eye of the jig. I don’t know if this is true, I’ve only used ZMan chatterbait and most of their models have the blade directly on the eye

Blade on eye is what you want, but since it's a patented feature, other companies do it differently. Can you have a bladed jig with a split ring that works ok? Sure, but it won't be as good.

Split ring chatterbaits are a no go for me. Blade is too slow to start up and they sometimes bind up and don't wanna work at all. Getcha some Z-Man elites. Best factory bait I've tried. The upgraded hook and line tie are well worth the extra couple bucks over the original, and they aren't ridiculously overpriced like the jackhammers.

I'm in the split ring camp. The blade moves further, giving a bigger thump, imitating a larger baitfish. I've always caught larger fish with them as a result. The direct connect heads are a sharper vibration and seem to cut through vegetation a little better if that's a concern.

I will not buy a chatterbait that uses a split ring to connect the blade.  They're not worth it.

It goes to how I always talk about confidence. Fish what you have confidence in and you'll catch more and bigger fish. I have hundreds of pictures of big fish caught on bladed jigs with split rings, have won a good chunk of money with them, but some people think they're junk ?‍♂️ Use what works for you and you'll get the most of your time on the water.

I've fished with both and won't go back to the ones with split rings.  I know they still work and catch fish but they are just not as good from my experience.

Exactly, and I wouldn't trade my split ring baits for all the Jackhammers in B. Hites boat. They've never produced as well or the quality, for me, so I don't fish them as well because the whole time I'm fishing one I'm thinking that I should have one with a split ring on.

Bluebasser, I have heard good things about your bladed jigs and know you catch fish on them.   I am going to try a bladed jig with a split ring for sure this year.  I think it will have different look and vibration that what is usually thrown (Zman).  Thanks for the confidence boost!!

I want to say I go both ways.

But I just can't do it.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I try to tell this to some of my fishing buddies with any bait. Keeping it specific to chatterbaits, they ragged on me for being "caught" by such a gimmicky looking lure years ago. But as soon as I caught a 7lber on it, a few of them rushed out to load up on them. Years go by and they once again tell me chatterbaits are "trash" and they can't catch anything on them, but then they never throw them or put in the effort to gain confidence. No lure is going to be a magic bait if you don't put in the effort to learn when and how to throw it.
