I think it sucks that SC replaced a classic rod line like the Avid (with full cork handles) with rods that have covered EVA foam handle instead of an exposed blank reel seat on the casting models. 

 

That is something you find on an Ugly Stik. Not a good St. Croix rod. 

 

that is a huge step backwards if you ask me. 

I think discontinuing the Avid is a mistake.  I'm quite surprised.  Maybe when they upgraded the mojo to the sc3 blank, the Avid should have received a blank upgrade as well.  They could have even done an Avid AGS now that Daiwa is selling them guides.

Eyecon was updated along with BassX and panfish. They were just clearing out old models.

Also avid spinning rods are still available on their website whole the casting model is not. Theres also the avid inshore still available.

I saw them pushing the new panfish and bassX rods pretty hard last summer especially in the case of the bassX.  I didn't hear or see anything about the eyecon.  

I know they didn't discontinue the entire Avid line.  They just put out a new Avid Surf.  The new inshore mojos had me worried about the future of the inshore avids when they debuted.  I could see them updating the Inshore Avid within the next couple years, the current design is from 2018.  With all the breakage issues the Mojo Inshores are having SC is going to have a hard time selling them, much less replacing a far more successful and popular line like the Ins Avids. 

So no more full cork handles on St Croix?

Dude I had been looking to get one of the 6’2 casting rods and 6’3 spinning rods, Googled Avid Casting rods without any luck and now I’m here. 
 

St. Croix is one of the last manufacturers making non-flashy rods with full cork handles and shorter rods (6’-6’6”). I hate that they’re going the same direction as the other guys but I guess that’s where the money is.

 

Guess I’m going to go ahead and order a 6’3” spinning that I’ve been eyeballing for a while. The Avid-X was pulled as soon as I was interested in one of those as well. 

Hate to hear about the end of the AVID line.  The SC AVID was the first "real nice" rod I ever had.  I topped it with a 2000 Shimano Stradic FG (I believe) and caught many fish with it.  I was very proud of that rig!

To clear up any speculation, St. Croix is not discontinuing Avid. I will not go into any great detail over the plans for the series, however, I witnessed a lot of speculation to the point I need to step in. 

I will add that Avid casting rods were retired. As any good Packer fan knows (or Buccaneer), just like NFL quarterbacks, things can come back from retirement after a period of time and in some cases better than ever!  

ok thats good to know. i was in the tackle store on the weekend and the classic Avid's still feel nicer than the Victory series at least to me.

 

the full cork handles and the exposed blank cut away on the baitcasting models make the Avids seem more slim and possibly lighter. the foam at the reel seat is thick and makes the reel seat seem chunky.

 

Also, whichever fuji reel seat they chose has a really short trigger piece, its like a little nub. 

 

I dunno maybe its just me. Im so used to the ECS (??) reel seat used on my Loomis rods.

I have four Victory rods and my Avids are 100x more comfortable and fun to fish with. Something just feels “off” to me. 

Bums me out as the Avid’s were a perfect blend of classic looking and comfortable.  Also, they didn’t have a goofy naming system. 

The OG Avid blanks (SCIII) are still available in the Mojo series.

I was under the impression that although they both contain SCIII graphite they were not the same rod blanks???

That impression may originate from the mojo being made in Mexico but the factories, materials and mandrels are all identical to Park Falls. Either way they may be worth a look since things are changing. 

To clear up confusion. 

 

Both Avid and Mojo use SCIII Carbon Fiber (not graphite), both are built on IPC mandrels; IPC stands for 'Infinite Poly Curve' and a very important element to both of these series. Other than origin of manufacturing, some lengths, powers, and actions, the SCIII rolled in St. Croix North is the same as the SCIII rolled at St. Croix South.
