Hello! Thanks for taking the time to read my post and respond. I am in college, so it is very hard for me to get much time on the water from about September to April/May. I stay pretty busy but usually take this time to go through everything, reorganize everything, inventory, replace or fix things, etc. I have 8-9 reels that I need to respool, but don't know how much fishing I will be able to do for another 2-3 months. Would you suggest waiting until closer to time to respool to avoid memory issues, or would it be fine to go ahead and throw on new fluro? I have a 1200 yd spool of assassin that will go on most of these, but did not know if having the line sit on smaller spools for 2-3 months would induce more line memory. I have KVD line and lure that I use as well. Thanks!

if you aren't going to be using it then I would wait until you are.  There is no reason to have potential issues and spooling up a rod takes less than 10 minutes at most.  

Back when we used all fluorocarbon we'd unspool most of it and give it a good stretch and wind it back up.

This would alleviate memory. 

 

 

New fluoro? No, I wouldn't spool it until like the last minute. The second you put it on spools, it starts collecting memory. There's only so much KVD line conditioner can do. Braid line is different story though.

I guess I have a different perspective on this. I have reels that have been spooled with the same fluoro going on 4 years in some cases. I sure as heck don’t take it off between trips, and I also don’t remove it during winter. So I don’t think it really matters when you spool it on, outside of possibly benefiting you on that very first trip of the year by spooling later. Beyond that, it’s a wash. Do it whenever you feel like it. 

It will be fine if you spool it now, but why do it if there is a chance to do it closer to when you are going to use it?

I don't see an issue either way as long as the reel is stored out of sun light and cold weather.  I too have reels with FC on them that haven't been changed in a few years. 

Spool it now in case you get the itch on a nice day

#11 on my "You know how I know you don't fish" list is tackle fondling.

I remove any line that becomes difficult to use if left on the spool for a few months.  I remove it from the spool and put it in the trash.

I do not see any difference in casting or knots breaking on my10 ? year old 1 pound spool of Ande 4# test Mono that is NEVER left outside in the boat unused. I use it most of a day... Then right back to a dark corner of a bedroom. It is 4 or 5 years old. Used 5 out of 7 days sometimes.  When Mono loses that shiny clear look ?  I trash it............BUUT  It is only the top layers that are affected. I still have 3/8" of like new 4#  line underneath.  I will never use up the Ande 1 pound spool of 4# test. It is kept in a drawer  all winter near Lake Ontario.

Yup we are operating on the same wavelength, friend

If The FC line is only a year old no reason to respool the line unless it was stretched. 

Simple walk off about 50 yards of line without anything tied on, wet a terry towel and fold it with the line between the folds. Now step back about 10, from the towel and reel the line back onto the spool running it between your thumb and index finger to add a little tension and feel thecline for any defects. No abrasions or nicks you good for another year.
