So I was looking at getting the new Dobyns maverick rod, in 7ft moderate-fast action. I have no experience with a true moderate action rod, so is the mod fast a big difference from the original moderate? Also, would this rod be limited to just throwing squarebills or if I was in a pinch could I throw a chatterbait or light texas rig?

I run about 4 mod fast rods, one for jerkbaits, squarebill, chatterbait and another one in a true moderate for Rapala DTs and balsa baits. On the squarebill rod, I also use it to sling Spinnerbaits. 

 

My chatterbait rod is glass and works flawlessly. 

I use one for 3-6 foot diving square bills and chatterbaits. Depending on the rod you might be able to use it for jerkbaits. 

I like a moderate fast for spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, and lipless cranks. I’m sure I’d like it for chatterbaits too. Sometimes I think that I should switch to a fast for spinnerbaits, but I practically never miss one on a spinnerbait. If one bites it, it’s mine. 95% of the time

I don't have the Maverick 705CB (yet), but I have a Fury 705CB that should be identical action. It's definitely on the moderate side of moderate-fast (it's very spongy but not a wet noodle), and I think the rod works best with braid-to-leader (or a lower stretch fluoro). I use mine for lipless cranks, but chatterbaits and squarebills would be good to go on it as well. I personally wouldn't throw a T-rig on it but I don't see why you couldn't in a pinch.

Mod-fast also does a nice job snapping 4-5 inch swimbaits off the bottom for walleyes and smallies.  There is something about it that yields the right acceleration off the bottom.  And they work well for slow/steady retrieve that smallies often like.

Good to know it works for T-rigs! I enjoy a stiffer tip for the technique personally, but this is one of the things I love about our sport; there is no one-size-fits-all approach to a technique. Sounds like the OP will be good to go for what they want to use it for.

I tried it just to see. Yeah, it’s a crankbait rod, but I fish a lot of soft plastics. And I figured what the heck. The action makes it simple to cast lighter-weight lures, but the surprise was the hooksets with a 3/0 EWG. It set the hook quite easily.

I tend to fit in with your style.  Moving baits are great, trebles or single hook.  T-rig seems a little too soft for both snaking/shaking it through the weeds and hook sets.
