Dobyn's Fury Rod for Jigs?

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

I really need to get myself a jig specific rod. I have all Dobyn's Fury stuff since it is affordable and a good value. I've got a really nice selection of custom jigs I bought from NorthStar a few years back (football, arky head, etc). I never fish them because I always have something else tied on (Texas Rig usually). I'll probably pair it with a Shimano SLX XT 151HG (7:1) reel.

Any recommendations on which Dobyn's Fury model? Maybe the 734C?

Definitely a 4-power

My jig rod is a Fury 704 with a Patriarch 7.1 mounted.

Yea. The 704 is just a shorter version of the 734 correct? I think I'd like the extra length

This rod is $129 and is lighter and much more sensitive than a Fury. Beats the Kaden, Sierra, and Champ too IMO. I love it for jigs, trig's, and frogs.

Agreed. I have a fury 734 and the Tharp money maker and for jigs I prefer the Ark rod hands down. For even less money on tackle warehouse right now you can get an ark lancer pro 7'3" mag medium heavy...another great jig rod and a steal at $80. I do like the dobyns for weightless senkos and flukes on heavy wire hooks.

Dobyns  go with the 4 or 5 power depending on the jig hook wire dia/size.

Catt has recommendedDaiwa Tatula TTU71MHXB, 7’1” MHXFast for his jig & worm fishing near your price point.

Yea I hear good things about the Tatula rods. That’s definitely an option. Prefer something maybe a tad longer

I use 6’10” JWR rod and easily cast 7/16 oz jig between 40 to 50 yard all day long. 7’1” is a good length.

So So many great Rod choices today in mid range pricing and Fury series ranks high. Imo

Our local tackle shop pushes Dobyns and I'm ok with it.

What weight jigs?

Keep in mind a 3/8oz jig + trailer weighs right at or just over 3/4oz (depending on trailer). You will definitely need a H or XH in the fury line since they run a little light, unless all your jigs are lighter than 3/8oz.

I always suggest that people upgrade on a jig rod. While sensitivity is mostly about the person holding the rod, a nice rod tends to bring confidence, and that is very important. When I say "a nice rod" I don't mean expensive, if you are confident in the fury line of rods and your ability to catch fish with jigs, then you will be successful. I just find that (for me) jigs are the most rewarding bait to have confidence in.

Please forgive my sleep deprived rambling...

I have no problem spending $200-$250 on a jig rod if that’s what it takes

All it takes is whatever gives you confidence. Fury rods are great at their price point. My only complaint about them was, in my hands, they weren't very sensitive. I caught plenty of fish with them on jigs, they work just fine. However I have far more confidence in, and feel way more structure with (even if it's all in my head) a better blank. What constitutes a better blank is largely personal preference.

What I'm getting at is, if you want to stick with Furys, you will be fine. Just make sure you get one that can handle the weight you are throwing. But... if you are ever going to splurge on a nicer rod, a good jig rod is a good place to do it.

Not what you asked for, but I would wholeheartedly recommend the Falcon LFC-74H Heavy Cover jig over anything in the Fury lineup for $10 more. Sensitive and with better cork than any of my Dobyns  Champions.

I fish tatula / tatula elites exclusively and being a former fury and sierra owner, the tatula's are in my opinion for sure a step above.

There is a 7'3" and 7'6" MH version of the tatula line of rods.

Looks like those both have a Fast taper instead of Extra Fast like the 7’1”. Does it matter? If it doesn’t would you go 7’3” or 7’6”?

It wouldn’t matter to me. I love the taper of the Tatula fast MH rods. Great jig and t rig rods. Also great for belly weighted swim baits and swim jigs.

I’ve been hearing really good things about the Falcon Amistad as well.

I don't have that model but now have five different models and have yet to be disappointed. Academy carries some of the line and I've benefited from many $20 off $100 purchases as a card holder, in addition to a 5 percent discount. Excellent value at $129, yet alone for $105 on sale with discount ??

The 734c in whatever price point you’re looking at. I’ve fished the 734c in multiple lines and they are great rods for jigs- in fact it’s a great jack of all trades rod if you’re looking for one.

The champs actually that much nicer. My Texas rig / jig rod is a champ 704.

i wouldn’t put that money up for any moving baits or top water, but nearly all my fishing is on that rod.
