We had some BPS credit to burn so I told my son to order me a decent spinning set up.  In my email this morning I see he bought the following:

 

Reel:  Daiwa Tatula LT 2500

Rod:  St. Croix Premier ML 6ft6

 

Should I hug him or never let him order stuff for me again?

St Croix makes great rods and daiwa makes great reels..so a hug is in order. Depending on his age maybe raise his allowance to!

The Tatula LT is a fantastic reel! I went with the 2000 which is lighter than like 98% of casting reel in the market to put its weight into perspective, but some people prefer the larger spool too and the 2500 is still quite light too so that will do nicely too.

 

And the St Croix ML rods are pretty ideal for a do everything finesse rod.

Personally for finesse I prefer 1000 series spinners but 2500 works just fine. 

 

For light the Vanford 1000 would be a great choice in the same price range.  Rod works for me in that $.   I have caught slot reds on my 1k Stradic FL so no question these $ 1k's can handle LMB

Is 2000 Tat Lt  a 1k body with larger spool ?  I thought it was.   I did not realize how light they were.

Agreed.  But for ultralight (as opposed to finesse) setups, I prefer 500 form factor reels.  Nothing like a sub 7 oz rig for slider fishing.  OP, nice setup given the budget constraint!

My current UL rig is just a tad over 10oz using my Stradic FL with carbon handle and knob mounted to a UL 632 rod 3.19z.  I can not fathom something 30% lighter given how light mine feels.  The only thing I do not like about the 500 reels is you loose so many features of the 1000+ reels.  Sacrifice I guess for weight is worth it.  Best I could do is go to a 1k Vanford to get me to maybe 8.5-9 oz.
