Beginner tackle box for nephew...

Featured Replies

So I'm looking to out together a box for my nephew who is turning 9 next week. Not solely for bass I'd kind of like a mixture so he can fish for whatever. What should I put in there?

What is your nephew’s rod & reel combo?

9 year old boy can cast spinning or spin cast effectively so focus on that.

The basic tools you use on a days outing are needed, maybe a multi tool that has needle nose pliers, clipper and blade.

Terminal tackle like assorted split shot. Pre rigged bait holder hooks size 10 and  8 for pan fish using live worms.

Small size swivel clip to attach the pre rigged hooks.

Plastic bobbers, and Thill slip bobber. Hook tool to remove swallowed hooks.

Box of assorted crappie jigs.

Bag of bass worm hooks size 1 drop shot, size 1/0 worm hooks T-rigs.

1/8 oz drop shot weights, and bullet weight.

Bag of 4 1/2” curl tail Roboworms, oxblood red flake for both spilt shot and drop shot rigs.

In-line spinners, Mepps or Panther Martin.

Small size Jitter Bug, 2” frog

Original floating Rapala minnow F09 black back silver.

Should be a good started box.

Budget?

Oh I'd go up to $100 for baits, tools and a box.

not sure what he has but I think my dad is giving him a medium or medium light spinning with 6 or 8lb mono. Should be able to do alot with that.

My advice would be to add a book into the mix with that budget. Idk about kids today but theres something cool about the older multi species fishing books. Even if some info is outdated, i like how its presented. Most can be had for a couple of bucks used.

Oh,

To have $100 in new gear and to be Huck Finn again!

At 9 yr old can he go tramp the river with buddies?

Backpack to carry tackle.

-2 x plano 3620 boxes

-Asset wt jig heads with light wire hooks

-2/0 up to 5/0 ewg hooks

-worm hooks

-rattling 1/8 oz to 1/4 oz tube jigheads w/ 60 deg. line ties.

- Soft plastics (craws & worms)

- 2 x DT4 Squarebill

- 2 x 1/8 oz black maribou jig

Maybe add split shot and nose wts and that's probably what I always carry.

LOL

Edit - and pliers

I put together an order and gave him stuff from my personal stash. Worm weights & hooks, split shots, thill floats, 2&3in grubs, lead heads , Aberdeen hooks, small spinnerbaits, jitterbug, 4&6in curl tail worms, baby brush hogs, rapala floater, rooster tail, mepps, rebel tiny pop R, pliers and a pair of nail clippers. Should be a good start for him.
