Use Rockcrawler in an off color or different crank in better color?

Featured Replies

Gonna go fishing with my dad in a boat.  I usually fish from shore in little ponds and catch small fish.

Water is decently clear maybe 5-7 feet.  Lake has surprisingly little weeds due to carp and such.

We will do some trolling with crankbaits.  We will catch some bass this way.

After going last time, I bought a several deep cranks, though I split them up between me and my son.  Thinking about my last trip, I'm think a rockcrawler could do well.   A smaller lure that dives around 11-12 feet.

However, my only Rockcrawler is fiery red and orange, maybe a Delta Craw.  I've never had alot of faith in red.  Now watching too much you tube, tubers say red is not so good in fall, go with a shad pattern.

Note this is for starters, I can eventually use 4 or 5 different lures trolling maybe 30 mins each.

So, the question is:

If you had just ONE Rockcrawler to use next week and it was fiery red/orange, would you go with it, or instead use a Strike King 5XD Crystal Shad or a Cloud 9 C10 in a shad pattern.  How important is the color here?

Note - does anyone else have just ONE Rockcrawler :)

Thanks!

I usually choose red in the fall, it’s been a good color for me. With no good, repeatable explanation, some colors just work better on some lakes than others. Trial and error is often the best way to find out what works on your lake.

I have 3 'main' colors, mostly to feed to brown bass feeding on crayfish.

Phantom Brown, Phantom Green & Red Crawfish.

They all get bites for me.

The 'other' patterns are just to keep them & me honest.

Not sure what that means exactly but I think it's what all the cool kids say . . . . .

I have zero .   I dont troll very often  . I used  the Norman Deep Baby N in chartreuse when targeting 10 to 15 foot . Caught dinks and crappie . Norman Deep Little N , same color when trolling deeper . Caught 2 and 3 lbers with it .

I have two. Both red. I use them in the fall.

Crankbaits are a big part of my. I fish some of the SPRO’s, great baits. I’m fishing the off colors due to the river being in a pretty much constant stain. Melon Craw, Spring Craw and Burnt Orange Craw have yielded fish. But I don’t put them head over heals better than a Bomber, Bandit or Rapala. An equal good quality bait. Rapala’s natural patterns seem to produce the best for me.

Tubers say a lot of things. I say, throw something different than the previous 20 boats that fished the spot.  However, if red don't cut it then I'm pretty sure there's a shad patterned crank bait that will work besides a rock crawler.

You are trolling with 2 rods try the red craw on 1 and the shad on the other rod, let the bass decide.

That is a great pattern also. Red yes but has the spring yellow highlights to it. Good luck with it.
