What do you think? I would be using it on a medium heavy St. Croix triumph. I am a recreational bank fisherman, not a pro.

For bank fishing in shallow water, the techniques tend to be finesses-oriented, and for light lures, reel and rod weight play an important factor in sensitivity and presentation.  IMO BG 2500 is a bit heavy for that task; a 1500 under 9oz should suffice. Although the 1500 only has 4.4lb max drag, it is enough for most bass fishing.

I purchased a BG 2500 a few months ago and I was impressed!  Built like a tank and extremely smooth.

 

As someone that prefers lighter reels (Vanfords, Stradic Ci4+ etc) I was concerned about the weight of the reel prior to buying it.  It felt lighter than expected once I used it.

 

I fish from the bank myself and would highly recommend it.

The BG sizes are bigger then the LT sizes.  A 2500 BG is slightly bigger then a 3k.  Im not sure how the MH triumphs are.  If you had a M I would say go with a 3k fuego for FW.  The whole issue of flex is so overblown its ridiculous, especially if your drag is set for FW bass fishing.  Ive caught plenty of 12-15 lb stripers on my 2500 fuego in tide without any stem flex.  

If you want a metal frame reel, I would recommend you try to find a 3k Shimano Spheros SW.  Its basically a Stradic FK- a couple bearings.  While the BGs are good reels the Spheros beats it in every category.  BG has a larger gear, but BGs gear is cast zinc where Spheros is forged AL.  The only issue they only come in a 3k and 4k XG.  I think Shimano is hesitant to make it in all sizes as it would cut into Stradic Sales.    

I have two BG 2500s that were my primary reels before I learned how to throw a baitcaster, now they are my inshore setups. They did everything I asked them to as a bank angler and then some, caught some PBs on them and never had a hiccup. 11/10 highly recommend them at their pricepoint.

The BG description claims the gears are machine cut aluminum, unless I misinterpreted the description. Are you talking about the current model?

OK, you are right, I misread the description of the BG. It does not say aluminum machine cut gears.

I have one and it has treated me well.

As a bank fisherman I look for a bullet proof reel.

I have a 2500 BG and a 3000 BG and would recommend them against anything in their price range.

It's on my M/H duty rod. Good value for money.

LOL, Amazon had the 2500 at reduced price of $99. I could not resist. Bought it Tuesday and it will be delivered tomorrow. I may try it on a medium rod. At 9.3 ounces it's not really that much heavier than other reels. If I don't like it there, I will move it to the MH.

I have had the BG2500 for a year. I got that size so I could use it with popping corks for saltwater along with bankfishing. It works for bankfishing. But, I'm looking to get a smaller reel 1000 size for this application. The 2500 is overkill.

It's hard not to like. Feels so solid, and if you're not focused on weight as a big thing, you won't care. I'm not and I don't.

    Are you going to use the reel in salt water?  If so, buy the BG.  I own many salt water spinning reels that are top of the line models, from Pen, and Shimano.  I bought my first BG because I needed an inexpensive reel for novices to use.  I didn't expect it to last very long, and wasn't looking for a smooth functioning reel.

     4 years later it is still going strong, and I use it more than any other spinning reel I have.  I'm not saying it is as good as a Stella, but for the price noting even comes close to competing with the BG.

     For freshwater only use, there are many reels in the price range that are lighter, and will work well.

    

I've got 2 2500 and a 3000 BG reels and I'd recommend them to anyone. My father also has a bg 3000 and has had no issues and also loves it.
