Foraging...

So in the spring of the year I always hunt down some asparagus and morels...then I often times pick mulberries when they come in season. I was curious who out there likes to forage some of natures goodies? Also is there anything you find in fall?

Persimmons.  Walnuts too if I can find some the squirrels haven't found first.

There have been three or four places along my recent daily work route where I have to drive through a stretch where persimmons have landed all over the street

also, I forgot about pawpaws

That picture was from 2016. I don’t think I’ve eaten any of them this year but this is the time to find them.

What do they taste like?

Banana, mango, and vanilla ice cream all mixed together. It’s like a tropical fruit but in a southern hardwood forest.

Sounds about right. I will say sometimes it’s almost like you are eating nothing but it’s cool and refreshing nonetheless.  My wife hates them. She even sorted all the seeds out and made a pie, thinking it would taste like something else. That took her about 3 hours. She took one bite of the pie and said ewww, so I ate the whole thing

Wild blackberries, blueberries, raspberries and Quince.  Morels when I can find them, I don’t trust my identification skills with any other mushrooms.  When I lived in Florida, between my landlord’s property and my property (we lived side by side) he had planted 6 actors of citrus and enough varieties that there was something in season year round.  Multiple varieties of oranges, 6 if I remember correctly, grapefruit (pink, red and yellow), figs, pecans, walnuts and a few more I am probably forgetting.  When I lived in Iowa I had an orchard on my property with asparagus as a ground cover. I had a 2 acre garden that supplied all of our vegetables.  We only went to the store for meat and dairy. There’s something very rewarding about eating what you have grown or foraged.
