Mud Motor for bass Fishing?

Featured Replies

I have an old motor that came with my Jon boat, but frankly it is appearing to be more of a time/money pit than I had originally hoped. The verdict is still out one giving up on this motor, but I am looking into viable options. I got on Youtube/google yesterday and saw these mud motors. I thought this thing would be perfect for the shallow river that I fish. I wasn't sure if anyone here has any experience with how the mud motor did when coupled with bass fishing? Most of the videos I've seen are dudes going over logs/stumps and running the boat in ankle deep water. I am a fisherman and not a thrill seeker, so I'd just need something to get from A to B.

Just because you can drive over logs and stumps doesn't mean you have to. Mud motors are great for running in shallow water so if you have a lot of that, it would be a good option. It might let you access more water than you currently could with the motor you have.

I’ve been out with a friend who had one.  We didn’t jump any logs but did run in water that was about 2 inches deep.

Pretty much exactly what i was thinking! I bought the jon boat to fish the river, so I might as well get the best motor for it.

Only type of engine* you see in south east Asia.

Catt is familiar with mud engine, my experience was they are very noisy!

A quick look the Mud-Skipper should work.

Cheaper than jet, easier maintenance, way more fuel efficient. Been running mine for ten years I would imagine, it’s wonderful. Like Tom mentioned,  they are very common in Thailand, and that’s where I ordered mine from046-E5-E3-A-1-BE7-4080-AD2-E-4-CAFC2-D89

I was talking to a guy on my river who had one. He loves it but said the issue is if he gets too shallow with all the rocks the motor just bounces and he can’t go forward.  Gravel, Soft bottom and weeds he is king. Rock ledges is where he has the issue and he thinks a jet would be better.  He had something along the lines of a mud buddy. Not sure if that was the exact brand.

Depends on if you're talking a "long tail" or a "beaver tail".

A long tail is like what @TnRiver46 is running. A beaver tail has a shorter "tail".

The long tail takes a special talent to operate while the beaver tail handles more like an outboard.

Beaver tails are 100× more popular down here, especially the ones with a reverse option.

I don't know if you've priced them yet but I paid right at 6k for a 40hp Tohatsu & that was 2-4k less than a surface drive.
