Like @airshot I have never replaced a prop on the water. Many years ago my first boat was 14' aluminum V hull. I had two motors for this boat. One was a 12HP and the other was an 18HP. I don't remember which motor this happened with. I was fishing one time and had to replace the shear pins three times on the water that day. Spent more time replacing shear pins than I did fishing.

Always better to replace pins than gear cases! 

Changed a prop 3 times while in the water. All 3 were because of a spun hub.

 

Twice in a marsh, firm bottom, standing about waist deep.

 

Once on Toledo Bend, just headed to the bank.

 

Back then when you bought an outboard it came with an aluminum prop, we bought stainless props, keep the aluminum for  backup.

I have a spare prop that I bring in the truck on any trips that are longer than a day. If I’m going to a lake for a week, the prop comes along in the truck. I ruined a prop once on a local river. No big deal but it took nearly a week to source a replacement. I realized that that would effectively ruin a week long trip, so I bought and started carrying a spare. I use aluminum props, so they are cheap. If I used stainless I would just carry a spare aluminum.
