Any Pelican Bass Raider Owners Out There?

Featured Replies

That's a good looking boat.  I have a Basshound 10.2 but I have been able to use some of the ideas from this thread on my boat even though its not a 10e.  I bet you can do the same.

UPDATE!!! SORRY EVERYONE but Photobucket wants me to spend 399 dollars to host my pictures...I just refuse to do that!  You can still check the pics out with this link: http://s709.photobucket.co

  • Picked up my bass raider 3 or 4 months ago and I absolutely love it.  I did a bunch of mods including a casting deck and the deck is rock solid.  It's 3x more stable on my deck than standing in some o

Searching for outboards to use on my basshound 10.2.  I have someone offering me a briggs & Stratton 5hp 4stroke for a decent price.  Anyone have any experience with this motor?  Reviews I'm reading say its pretty loud since its aircooled.   Here's a pic of it:  as1.JPG

I used to have one of these and by you posting a picture of it raised my blood pressure at the thought of it. I hated it and spent a lot of time and money repairing it. I had the mount that holds it on the transom break, I had the throttle handle break off yes the whole thing, and I had the prop deteriorate completely down to a nub when it hit some sand. The metal is cheap cast and wont withstand normal wear and tear. I could go on for days about how I hate this motor but I think I have made my point.

Okay, I'm looking for some better seat brackets that came with my Raider 10E. I'm a big guy and it seems that the aluminum brackets are giving in a little. Sometimes I feel like they're going to break on through and there I'll be...in the water. Does anyone know who sells a more sturdy heavy duty bracket?

Went the not so creative route of making a rudder. Bought a $12 oar and $25 bracket.

Where did you get the bracket?

Winter here in PA and I'm going to get the boat in the garage for upgrades.  I have some questions that hopefully some can help me out with..

1.  Big Foot Switch - once this switch is spliced into TM, am i stuck using it?  Basically I have a casting deck that I made that I am going to mount the switch to.  However, if I am in a rush and want to go for a quick hour session, am I stuck bringing the casting deck with me each time (given the switch is mounted to it)?  I have no experience with these switches so I apologize for the ignorance.

2.  Fish Finder - What is the consensus here as to where to mount the transducer?  I can obviously mount it to the TM, but for the sake of saving wires running along the boat, does it make sense to mount it to a fabricated pole next to my seat (the unit is going to be mounted right next to my seat)?

Thanks guys!

I mounted mine on a block of wood tied to the Big Foot with plastic strips so it won't gouge the glas bottom but I use a floorboard.  I rigged it portable so it can be removed easily.  If you splice into the TM wires you will need it as the TM then only controls the speed not the propulsion.

Use a pedestal and floorboard, see pics on post above.

Well it sold before I even had a chance to look at it... probably a good thing.

I'm thinking of getting a 10 foot boats from Academy. Can't remember the band. Maybe a Bass Raider...Anyway..what size trolling motor is big enough. I will not use a gas motor at all. I was thinking 40# would do it. Any suggestions?

Ive used both a 20lb thrust and now use a 45lb thrust on my boat.  The 20lb definitely got me out fishing, but the 45lb gets me out fishing and fast.  If you're buying new, spend the extra 35 bucks and get a 45 compared to a 40lb.

I second the idea to get at least a 40 lb. thrust trolling motor. I use a 40 and it's fine for my 8' Bass Raider when I fish alone. The new digital models look to be very efficient.

40 lb thrust would work but 50 to 55 lb range would be better.

^^ What I use

those of you with trailers, take a look at these pics.  Notice my boat is not even touching the keel rollers. Would you change anything with this setup?

Sorry, not sure why my pics uploaded sideways

I've found a Bass hunter that's 9.5 foot long but its shallower than the Bass Raiders. Anyone have any issues with the Bass Hunter being too shallow and having water come in? The Hunter is more expensive new and looks to be one piece rather than two with the Raider.

I have an 8 foot hunter and love it.Not sure what you mean by shallower but very little water comes into mine. Its perfect when Im by myself or with my 11 year old G- daughter.I suspect it would be small for 2 men my size ,although its rated for 470 pounds. Its very stable and goes suprisingly fast with my 40 pt trolling motor.

Got the motor on the front and my hunter has the wiring for it so Im fixing to get some terminals for the front so I can have the battry in back to displace the weight.

By shallow I mean the height of the side walls. The Hunter looks like it rides much lower in the water. In pictures it looks like there's less above water.

It may be lower than the raider but I have no problem with it. It is very buoyant even with all the weight in the front. It sits higher than my jon boat!

It isnt best for a big water body though, although I was going directly into 15-20 mph winds with no problem. It handles waves better than you would think

mine is actually 9.5 feet long. Great little boat for small water bodies

Ok guys, my wonderful bride has given me the thumbs up for a bass raider 10e, we looked at them in a store tonight and she thinks the 12' Jon boat would be better. I noticed that it does look roomier, since we would occasionally bring our young (3) son with us. I think the bass raider will be much more stable, and it has almost 100 pounds more capacity. Anyone have experience with both that can offer some insight?

The stability of the 10e (twin poontoon types) is vastly superior to the jon boat types.

Thank you, I assumed it would be. While I think the jon would have more potential for storage options, I think I'm going to stick with the 10e.

I've owned a 8' basshunter for over 30 years now,..Ive had 2 full grown guys on it with 2 batteries and 2 motors,... on windy days? I wouldnt recommend it as heavier waves will breach it with 2 anglers aboard. But on calm days? no problems at all, just a bit tight room wise.

When I fish alone even the waves from other boats and mildly windy days dont effect me at all, as long as I point it into the waves as one should anyways. I have never swamped, or sank it. Love that little rig.

I have the 9.5 bass hunter and a 12 foot jon boat. And love both.T o me,the hunter is more comfortable.I have the factory chairs but they support me well ( at 260 pounds )It is also cooler because youre up a little higher and it allows better air flow under the seat.Ive learned to just swivel around if you need something behind you.You can even fish facing sideways and still reach the trolling motor which I have on front. The hunter s very stable for being so small.

The jon boat would be better for bigger water and you could put a bigger motor on it.It has more room but not much more. You could customize it to allow more room.I have fished many times in my jon with one other person and its fine.3 would be cramped on either boat, but a small child would work for a while with 2 adults .Esp. on the jon.I f possible, try sitting in both before you buy to see how much room youd have.

I also have a 2 seater kayak that Im not overly crazy about.
