Trolling motor security

Featured Replies

I posted it in another thread that I am going on a long road trip. I have a bow mounted Minnkota Ulterra on a quick release bracket. What is the preferred method to secure it to the boat? I’ve seen a few different brands of locks that are manufactured for this specific purpose. Is this the best option? Any other recommendations? Thank you.

Yes.

or remove it and put it in your vehicle locked up.

If it's the same quick release MK bracket I have on my Ultrex, there is a hole for a padlock that will make it impossible to remove the motor from the bracket without breaking the lock.

Buy the best lock you can get.  Cut-off wheels go through most locks in seconds.

I make a few long trips every year that put me in hotels overnight.  I’m of the school of thought that there’s only one way to be 99% sure your gear is safe and that’s to bring it in with you.  I’ve seen most every type of lock defeated, some easier than others.  Easiest are rod locker locks, you can bust them bare handed.  Next are the electronics locks that you can break with a hammer, I have a Lok r Bar that is a bit better but I have never locked my trolling motor or my prop and I know they make locks especially for them.  I know it’s impossible to strip your boat but it’s a matter of priorities.  I don’t put them in my truck either for obvious reasons.

Locks aren't designed to deter every thief out there.  They are only going to prevent the average thief that is looking for an easy, quick target.  Someone with enough balls and the right equipment can steal just about anything you leave exposed, but if you lock certain items, they might go to the next guy and steal his stuff instead.

In other words, you don't have to out run the bear.  Just out run the other guy.

Now the question is, how fast are you @BayouSlide?

Not as fast as I used to be...definitely not fast enough to outrun a law dog or a ticked off fisherman while carrying his trolling motor. ??

Do whatever you can to make it difficult to steal, keep good insurance coverage, park in well lit areas, many motels have security cameras, park in sight of those cameras.  Most motel owners can show you where to park to get the best pictures, at least they did for me when I was traveling with ATV's....
