70diesel
Not sure where to put this but I have had 2 Grass Ninja Blade 2.0's fall off my trolling motor. I fish a lot of grassy water and they do help but at $35 each, it's getting old with them falling off. I didn't use the two sided tape, I used a 2 part epoxy and they both still fell off. I was going to buy a third but was thinking, couldn't I just epoxy a standard razor blade from a utility knife on the trolling motor? Has anyone tried this? Worst case scenario is it doesn't work of when it falls off it will be a lot cheaper. Am I missing something here and this is a stupid idea?
keagbassr
I guess it's worth a shot, but why would you expect the epoxy to hold that if it didn't work with the ninja? Fwiw I've had mine on for I think 3-4 seasons with the tape and it doesn't seem to be going anywhere.
Super User TOXIC Posted June 5, 2023 Super User Share Posted June 5, 2023 I have a product called the Grass Goat. Not epoxied.
Super User casts_by_fly Posted June 5, 2023 Super User Share Posted June 5, 2023 The two sided tape with the ninja holds great. If you get another one, just use it. Epoxy won't stick unless you prep the surface. It needs a clean with alcohol and then a complete scuff with a scotchbrite pad to take the surface finish off. If you do that it will work. A couple guys have done the double razor blade trick on autopilots. It works well supposedly but I haven't done it myself.
70diesel
I read some of the reviews and people were saying the double side tape didn't hold up which is why I never tried it. I thought I cleaned the ninja blade enough but I guess not, the epoxy didn't come off the trolling motor, you can see it all came off the ninja blade. Super User casts_by_fly Posted June 5, 2023 Super User Share Posted June 5, 2023 yeah, its the same process for the ninja blade (or razor blade unless you fully encase it like most people do). Its called a 'water free' finish which just means that the epoxy is able to actually wet the surface and stick to it. I was sceptical on the tape when I put mine on, but good surface prep and adequate drying time (48 hours) seem to have worked for me. I've got 75-80 trips on it over 2.5 years now and its not moved. The heaviest stuff I go through is lily pads and none have ripped it off. I am also using the weedless wedge prop.
Junger
I have 2x and used the tape too. 2 years in, fishing heavy heavy hydrilla and they haven't budged.
airshot
I have never had the need to try any of these, but just thinking...why not a couple small screws/ rivets to hold these blades on ??

Any leak and the lower unit is filled with water. 2- you don't need to. glues and tapes work just fine and are far easier.
Super User TOXIC Posted June 6, 2023 Super User Share Posted June 6, 2023 Mine is held on with a supplied stainless hose clamp.
Way north bass guy
The tape works great. I’ve had mine on for at least 4 years now and it’s as solid as the day I stuck it on ( and it works quite well too).
airshot
Sorry, I was under the impression these were attached to the prop blades....
Born 2 fish
My ninja grass blade was on for 7 years with the 2 sided tape i put that thing through some slop and pads every trip. I sold that boat so I don’t know if it is still on. I have a new ninja grass blade sitting here that I will be putting on my new boat Saturday when I pick it up from the dealership I will use the tape again. Prep is very important
padlin
Just a thought. The Ninja’s are made of aluminum, you need special prep to get epoxy to stick to it, you can by an etching solution for it, which is the correct method. Fwiw, I had luck with aluminum solar panel mounting channel by sanding it and hitting it with alcohol just before using the epoxy. Most folks were using 3M VHB 2 sided tape, same thing many pro installers use to stick aluminum to fiberglass from roofs. Ninja ships with 3M VHB underwater double sided tape, I’d use it. That tape is the bomb - couple places I worked building machines, we used the VHB tape to secure items. It pretty much ignores heat and liquid. Stratasys: 3-D commercial printers - high heat, we used VHB to secure the glass doors to the hinges. Infinity Precision Systems: heated solvent/ultrasonic small parts cleaners (Seagate was one of our customers - they'd use the machines we built to clean parts for Hard Drives before assembly) - we used VHB to secure panels inside the machines. Tape failure in those machines was very rare - I'd trust it for this application, no question.
Super User Bankc Posted June 7, 2023 Super User Share Posted June 7, 2023 I'd go with the hose clamp idea.
txchaser
Did the tape it came with not work for you? Might need to hit the paint on the TM with a little sandpaper.
