The Free Rig Spinning Gear or Casting Gear

Featured Replies

I've searched and searched for this answer. I'll be brief. It is best on spinning or casting Gear.

Give me the following:

Spinning:

Line

Weight of tungsten or lead

Lure

Casting:

Line

Weight of tungsten or lead

Lure

For me I think a finesse Spinning setup works for me, but I'm open to Casting.

Give me your .02 on this.

Thanks

You don't talk about spinning gear. Clearly the whole preface is about fishing baitcasters on 20lb line near grass. Nice video, but I'm not interested on fishing it on a baitcaster. Texas Rigs belong on MY  baitcasters, in my opinion. Free Rigs seem more fairy wand fishing. It's the alternative of a Dropshot after all.

Just give me some suggestions. Creature baits, 20lb fluorocarbon, a baitcaster a jig worm rod and a 3/8oz tungsten weight. Got it for baitcasters.

Can someone give insight on Spinning gear? Thanks

I fish the Free Rig a bit lighter than some.

I fish with mono.

I like 4-6lb, but many I know like 8lb.

I like light or ultralight. But others I know like medium light.

I LOVE the DoLive Beaver with 1/4oz tungsten or less.

There's lots of variables to truly make it your own. I agree with you though..this is a great finesse presentation.

I have used it on both spinning and baitcasting. I found I didn't care for it on spinning.  I use weights from 1/8 up to 1/4oz and I fish it sort of like a Carolinas Rig but I pop the weight off the bottom allowing the bait to do its thing. I couldn't find a comfortable groove to do that with spinning gear.

I watched this a few days ago and the first bait he demos is on free rig, around the 5min mark. This is a good example of how it should work.  Cool bait as well.

I like the 3.5", personally. I use it with a 1/0 EWG. Screw lock or plain.

Thank you

I throw the Free Rig on both. 15-17 lb test with a Dolive Beaver is money. Or 6 lb test on my BFS setup throwing a ned rig.

I think this is a mistaken belief.  Once you get your spinning version worked out, you should rethink it for larger profiles.  If you think weightless flukes, gliding creatures, and stick baits can catch in 10+ water, popping a free rig is a similar look near the bottom and way more efficient.  With a floating worm, it becomes a variable height shakey head.  And I also drag worms and craws with it on the same cast.  3/8oz seems to be my sweet spot  for separating the weight and bait for the glide/spiral.  1/8oz and a 3-3.5" beaver/straight tail on a 1/0 hook is my finesse presentation on a M/F baitcaster.

Weird response man - you initially asked if it was best on Casting or Spinning, opining that it would best suited as a finesse tactic but then claiming you were open to fishing it on casting gear. Then a video on how to fish it is presented and you discount it and claim your opinion as fact. Jeez.

I fish the free rig on a baitcaster since it ends up being over 1/2 oz rigged. But you do you.
