What to do with a sudden warmup

Featured Replies

Water temp in upper 40's to low 50's and the surface temperature is FINALLY getting consistently warm we even have a day going to be 85!

What do you do with a hot day with a sudden jump like that where fish should be starting to move and get into full pre-spawn conditions.

The water won’t change much unless you have several warm days and wind.

^ If it's calm, you might see a 1-2 degree increase in surface temp - windy day with decent waves...3-5 degree increase.

Shallow sun baked wood and rock with fairly close deep water is where I'd be looking.

Sounds like great weather to call of work and get on the boat.

Greetings All,

If time and motivation allow, "Go Fishing!". That would be my response as an answer.

We have had that situation here in the desert SW frequently recently. With the various storms moving though we've had plenty of temperature swings. We are trending warmer and the fish catching is good.

If you can, have a go at them, you may find some very willing and interesting reactions! Be well and Cheers!

Just what @T-Billy said. Shallow wood, the sunnier the better is where I am during an early season warm or hot day.

Yeah that's the kinda day where you catch a fish alright.  I'd be looking shallow for prespawners!  Probably covering water with a lipless 😎👍🏼

Boat docks-specifically the ones with floats.

Fish more. Enjoy the weather.

I've caught some big bass on those sudden warm ups. They usually come on steep. rocky, sunny banks in the afternoon. My most successful lure has  been a crankbait such as a Wiggle Wart cast parallel to the bank and retrieved very slowly.

I wouldn't pass on that day. The lighter air can rouse them. Even if it doesn't, you'll sure enjoy the hot day. I'm just amazed at 85 in May. Wow! We might see 85 degrees one day come July, but likely only for a day or two.

Depends on the water depth. Shallow water and wind will change the temp much more dramatically than deep water and wind. The surface temp on my home water can change 5-10* overnight if the wind is blowing just right. Mind you, average depth is 4ft. Wind and 2ft rollers will change temp

I never even thought about something that shallow.  The lake I normally fish is 43,000 acres with a maximum depth of 220’ so one day won’t change much.
