Hi guys, 

 

I'm cleaning some of my old rods and noticed a couple of my Megabass rods with the 'soft touch' reel seats have started to break down, leaving a gummy/tacky reel seat.  There has to be a fix for this?  

Try odorless mineral spirits on a cloth rag to see if it wipes off.

Goo gone should take the sticky off and then a wipe with alcohol to take the goo gone off.

I tried alcohol to no avail.  Also tried baking soda pasted and nothing.  Goo gone is a consideration.

I do t think there’s a way to save the soft touch coating. You’ll probably have to strip it like you’ve tried. Magic eraser is a mild abrasive that might work well. Otherwise you’ll need a solvent. Go slow and keep it off anything else. Clean with soap and water after. 

If that's the same rubberized coating that goes sticky on the Abu rod reel seats and Pflueger President reel knobs, I haven't found anything that helped. I eventually just got rid of all of mine.

70% alcohol won't work, it's got to be like 90% or more. I had an old Nikon camera from the 80's that had a soft touch grip that was sticky. I searched online and found that solution. I tried it and it worked like a charm. I also had the same problem with a spade (like for digging in the garden) with a soft touch handle, it worked on that too.

 

I can't remember where I bought the 90%, but I know it was local, so it shouldn't be too hard to find.

you might find it in a hardware store in the pain aisle.

I’d be wary of brake cleaner. 
 

I used once. Once! To try and clear grime off my license plate. Grime gone. Paint gone.

I’ve used that stuff for years on a lot of different things and I can’t remember if I ever experienced what you describe.
 

I’m sure it could happen and I certainly don’t want to stare the man wrong.

I can only go by my experience with it.

It removes every sticking substance I used it on.  

 

I guess the best thing to do as in most things, try someplace that you can’t see and make sure it works.

Thats why I got rid of the soft touch reels seat on our rods.  OFF mosquito spray and or certain suntan lotions were melting the coating. 

Goo gone is working.  It's going to take some elbow grease.  I'll locate some 90% alcohol and try that as well.

Walmart has 90% and 100% alcohol 

Thank you, I'll give Walmart a shot if I don't find it at a local store.  I've never been to a Walmart store.
