Fish Identity

Featured Replies

I just got back from a 5 day camping/fishing trip on the Delaware River.

Caught a lot of smallmouths, largemouths and some american shad.

But I caught this one fish that didn't look like any other carp I've caught, can anyone tell me exactly what it is?

Thanks roadwarrior, I've been fishing for over 60 years living in New Jersey and I've never seen one.

I thought at first it was a huge smallmouth until I finally was able to see white fins coming up by the yak.

Part of the fun of fishing is you never know what you might have on the end of the line

Nope, not a buffalo. The Delaware doesn't have them.  Just a common sucker.  You can tell by the downward facing mouth.

The common suckers I've caught here in NJ had a more slender body.

I didn't see that buffalo's were near here in their range listings.

I did submit an email with the photos to the NJ fish and game freshwater division, I'll update if I get a response.

Common Sucker or possibly a big golden redhorse sucker? It’s so hard to differentiate suckers…

It's a carpsucker. Not a joke, a real type of fish. I think it is a quillback carpsucker but can't see the dorsal fin very well.

Seems like I recall a high fin carpsucker in the literature as well, I’ve never seen any of the true sucker fish in person besides nothern hog sucker, a small fish (excellent SMB live bait)

didnt realize there was water on this planet without buffalo, what a blessing ! 😂 We are overloaded with them at every turn, some people just walk into the water and grab them with their hands

Buffalo and Quillbacks are both deeper bodied fish than that fish. I'm guessing it's just a white sucker.
