Red hooks on t-rigs???

Featured Replies

My local store had a big sale on some red gamakatsu ewgs. Do any of you use red hooks on t-rigs? Why or why not?

No.

The red wears off quickly and you are left with shiny gold hooks.

I've used em. Caught nice river Smallies on them. But like @roadwarrior says, the paint wears off and they turn the color of the metal underneath. The ones I had were cheap, poor quality hooks. Wouldn't recommend, but they'll work good enough if you're on a budget.

I only put them on the nose of certain hard baits.
No point on a t rig as all that’s exposed is the part of the shank and part of the bend if the correct size hook is used for the plastic rigged.

But that’s me

I can’t say I performed a detailed experiment or an in depth study on red hooks but did try them in smaller (1/0 & 2/0) EWG’s and straight shank worm hooks as a for my own head and the hype around them. Split Shot and T-rigs smaller finesse worms for river Smallies.
My opinion is that they performs no better and in my own opinion worse, not as well as the bronze or a black.
But to each his own, and I’m sure findings would be different. I wouldn’t tell anyone to not try them.

Just use regular hooks. You could use some red Spike-It though

I use them in the Spring around the spawn because I feel like it makes the fish more angry.

The red comes off after a few fish, but this still feeds into my theory.  Be it red, or just a shinier hook that emits some extra flash, I feel the fish want to remove the threat from their bed area.

I've used them other parts of the year and haven't noticed myself getting less bites than with the standard black Gama EWGs, but now that the Nano Alpha models have been released, I just use those the rest of the year.

It's a confidence deal like most things in fishing....if you think they'll work, they probably will, if you don't think they work, they probably won't work.

I use them back 10 years ago when it was popular. lol

Uhh! Nope!

True Turn hooks were red, green, & don't remember what the 3rd color was.

I used to use them I absolutely would buy them if it was a good deal.

I am trialing a 25 pack of EWG Gammys against a 25 pack of standard black ones. I sharpen the hooks and use them until I snag them and break them off.   I have about half a dozen left.  They work before the red starts wearing off. They work after the red wears off.  I can’t say I notice any difference.  However, I have to admit the bit of red can spruce up the look of some plastic rigs.  They make for a nice accent to a white fluke for example.

I would have no problem using a red hook if the need arose. Heck, a lot of old school guys swap out the trebles on their crankbaits with red... so it certainly wouldn't bother me.

But, as has been said, confidence is everything. If you feel good about it, the fish won't care.

Red or black makes no difference to me. I don’t go out of my way to buy red hooks but if black isn’t available I will buy red

I use them all the time, because it seems nobody likes them and they get put on the sale rack constantly.

The only hook I have used on a soft plastic that has made a difference on multiple occasions, is the 5/0 Gammy straight shank saltwater fly hook. It was recommended by one of the best sticks in our bass club. It is very strong, very silver and very bright. I assume the flash it gives off is making the difference. I get them in the fly tying section of Bass Pro & Cabela's.
