I have a small box that clips to my belt loop for bank fishing. I drilled several 1/8" holes through the box, to allow air to circulate and keep things dry.                              If a hook becomes rusted too much, I throw it away.

MEK, Sulfuric Acid, Nitric Acid, the list goes on....there's a whole schmeer of things you can get over-the-counter that are dangerous.

 

Heck, gasoline is dangerous - one spark and "POOF"...and they let kids dispense it willy-nilly into their go-carts and power-bikes.

I think we can all agree that drying out wet tackle is the first step followed by storing the dried tackle in an environment that prohibits or retards rust formation. How one accomplishes that is up to the individual.

Many years ago I once put my wet shotgun away in a gun case after a day of hunting in the rain.  The next day when I took that shotgun out of the case, it had signs of rusting on the barrel.  I learned my lesson.  Locking in moisture into an enclosed area without air flow creates problems.

 

I imagine the same would occur to various fishing tackle.

I don't use wd-40 fishing, but devil's advocate, how is spraying a minimal amount onto a lure any worse on the environment than the fuel and grease all your big outboards are leaving in the lake? Especially those running two strokes?

I don’t know why the hysteria over a common house hold product that isn’t a carcinogen and isn’t as harmful to the environment as other commonly used products by the BR members.

If you look up MSDS reports for acetone, paint, paint thinners, denatured alcohol, gasoline, gasoline additives like StaBil you wouldn’t leave your home.

You are not using rust inhibitors like WD-40 on the water, you use rust prevention at home.

I assume a high % of the WD-40 complainers drive vehicles that use gasoline and have aircraft flying overhead and use chemicals far more harmful to the environment.

Silica gel for example can be toxic if eaten or gets into your eye some may contain cobalt chloride. There isn’t a panacea.

You can't spin it like this. It's not hysteria. It's being aware of the impacts we have on the environment. The damage we've (humankind) done to the environment is staggering. Some of the damage done is on a grand scale and other damage is small and cumulative.  Damage is damage no matter what the scale and it always comes back to bite us in the arse somewhere down the road. Having respect and dare I say, a reverence for the environment isn't hysteria. It's just common sense.

 

A wiser man than myself once said  "What We Do To Earth, We Do To Ourselves."

Sadly, we don't learn from our past mistakes and keep repeating them over and over......

We must take better care of the Earth (and waters) because the last I heard, they're not making any of it anymore.....

Impact wise, it's far less than outboards but it is an example "a lot is bad, then a little isn't so bad so it's no big deal" mindset. Everything we do has an impact and we need to be conscious of that in our decision making. Whatever we can do to improve the environment that is within our sphere of influence makes a difference no matter how small..
