You'll find MagZ to boom out large lures and have no start-up problems.   I've found the current generation of MagZ magnets are also strong enough to fish lighter SV inductor and even fixed-induc

  • Great reel with heavy fluorocarbon.  The tws let's line flow out smoothly and the braking system can handle stiff heavy fluorocarbon without needing to use spool tension to compensate.

And you yet may end up with more spools than reels.

I’ve been pondering the possibilities for sure.. there definitely seem to be a myriad of choices, more than I initially thought. I’m a big fan of MagZ going back to its introduction many years ago.

What I found comparing CV-Z to newer Ryoga and Zillion HD, the newer generation of magnets kick butt.  While my CV-Z swapping spools out-distanced everything in lawn casting, it fell apart on the water.  Back-acre casting 3 g to 140' w/ SV1000S Boost.
I set it up at Arroyo two weeks ago for 7-g dredging lures, SV1012 spool, RB-55 and metal microjigs.  When the line got wet, it mid-cast backlashed every cast on 7 g.  When I moved it up to 9 g, mid-cast problem completely disappeared.
I'm only going to use MagZ spools on this reel from here on, and that limits me to 7 g low-end.

The newer gen of MagZ magnets on Ryoga and Zillion HD will fish any BFS spool.
I already have miles on my SLPW-Z (based on '22 HD), and it's a champ with SV1000S Boost, Ray's SV, and even fixed-inductor Roro and AMO (linear mag only).

Thanks again for the data, it really helps out with potential future decisions. Btw, it’s funny how casting on our property vs the water usually ends up with differing results.

This was the first time for me, and in the dark yet.  Glad I made the choice to swap 7-g lure to 9-g, solve and recognize the difference (and it was casting 3 g in the back acre).

Every other reel I've set up in the back acre has performed exactly the same on the water.

My last backlash was 2018 because I had a one-turn tip wrap.  No other reel has backlashed for me.

Even the CV-Z wasn't crazy, but it was a concern trying to get distance in the dark.

I had Ryoga and CV-Z roles backwards.  I had the ryoga casting 15 g on MagZ PE#2 spool and it was landing beyond my sight in the dark - shoulda had them flip-flopped.

The older CV-Z magnets run full-time at max, while Ryoga and SLPW-Z are both running about 5-6 /20.

Have you upgraded the spool bearings on the 1000 HD?

  • Super User

Yes, I'm running full silicon-nitride ceramic - these are much quieter than zirconia, no oil, no salt concern.  Unlike zirconia, they also load-rate with steel - I ran SiN loose-ball in bike wheel hubs for 10,000 mi.

I'm more sad that when Amazon was on the blowout, I only bought one additional zillion instead of two.

d**n, wish I checked on the HD. I did cop a zillion though.

Whats the practical difference between the two?

Brass main gear and handle/knob size are all that I know of.  Kicking myself still for not going for one of each additional zillions.

@1984isNOW - on Express website - the size is 685 silicon nitride bearing, and search shows 6 vendors.

Recommendation is run these dry, and clean them in denatured alcohol before you use them.

Same size fits my best 4500C bench result, and last spring, this reel was throwing 3 g microjig to surface slashes 150' out.

And did you get the HD on Amazon sale?

Thanks, I'll check the express train.

Do it just let them sit in it for a while and Swirl it around?

Could I just use 90% isopropyl?

Wicked funny bro, I thought you thought i was asking about the difference between the zillion and the Amazon sale zillion (jdm)

That's the only difference for the HD? That's crazy

Also '22 Zillion HD comes with MagZ spool, '21 Zillion SVTW comes with SV Boost spool.

MagZ has a distance edge casting heavy weights, SV has a light-lure distance edge.

Yes to the rest.

Guy’s and Gals, gotta tell you.. these reels are incredible. My preferred casting style is pitching out to 70 feet give or take. These reels have surprised me. My accuracy has vastly improved & along with that, is the speed of the pitch.. I’m not sure that statement will translate well as I state it but I’m wondering if anyone else thinks this. It’s a very good long distance reel but my impression is that  for me, the accuracy is phenomenal in the short to mid-range casting/pitching.  I’m thinking about a third one and converting it with a BFS type spool. If anyone is debating this reel vs a Metanium or Bantam, my recommendation is the Daiwa HD 1000. I enjoy my Shimano reels but rarely have I made a reel purchase that has truly improved my game as the Daiwa has. Time will tell on durability.
I intend to update this thread as time moves forward, God willing 🙂

Of course they're incredible, these reels are guaranteed to be destroying Steez sales lol.

To me, of anything currently available right now, the Zil HD is the ultimate reel to buy over them all, including the Conquest, Anteres, Met DC, and everything else. When they discontinue these, there's zero chance that we'll be getting this kind of quality for the same price. This is the SV103 of today😱And i'd argue far superior to the SV103 because they're cheaper from Japan, comfier to palm, and have more tuning done to them.

Totally agree with you. They certainly have surprised me. Being a long time Shimano guy, I’m wondering why. 😂

And what's really impressive is how well they hold the butter smoothness over the years.

If you ever watched the Project T video when the reel 1st came out you would see a lot of lob casting and pitching hinting at the precision, effortless casting and control of the reel.  Only Jun Maeda shows off what I consider a normal distance cast.  Everyone else is doing close in work or lobbing baits.
