Best rod for finesse jigs - around 200

Featured Replies

I’m looking for a new rod for finesse jigs and lighter Texas rigs, which I’m thinking I would want a medium fast. If you recommend any other power let me know. I’m also looking for the specific model you would pick for around 200. If it’s more expensive that’s fine if it’s worth it. I had a falcon expert that I lost at a lake which was my favorite rod, and I’ve looked at the cara too. Let me know of any deals or anything on rods

thanks in advance

I have 3 setups specifically designed for finesse jigs (3/16 oz).  They are custom builds.   If it were me I would contact Delaware Valley Tackle and see what he would do for you.

How much does that cost

Check with DVT.  My rods are made locally.

casts_by_fly is 'The Man' when it comes to recommending Falcon rods.  I'm also a fan of Falcon rods, but have nowhere near his experience with them.

Quote from one of his posts:

Finesse jig/Topwater (6'10" MH/MF)- As the name implies, this rod was designed for light finesse jigs in clear Ozark lakes.  The first thing about this rod- its light weight.  In expert form it comes in at 3.8 oz but feels even lighter.  The top of the rod is really light so it feels like you're holding nothing at all.  It's rated 3/16-5/8 except in the Expert (which I have) which is rated 1/4-3/4.  I think on the Expert model that 3/16-5/8 is probably right.

which expert was it?  The finesse jig/topwater model (5-1610)?  Any reason to not get another?

It was the Mansfield 7’0 medium fast. It’s made for cranks which is what I used it for, another it definitely had a more moderate bend. It was too moderate for finesse jigs in my opinion.

Ive been trying to find a rod like that too.  Like a XF light MH or M+.  I have some mediums that are good for light jigs to 1/4oz, but they lack the mid and lower section power to be really good with 3/16 T rigs.  I grabbed a 7'2 MH m1 because a lot of people said it was more like a M F, but tis definitely a solid MH power wise, its just light in the hand and the action is slower F, but definitely still F.

I felt the m1 in store, it feels nice for sure. Maybe I will just get a medium heavy fast.

yeah that would be way too soft for a jig rod. It’s even soft as a crankbait rod for me. The expert finesse jig is what you want. The Cara swim jig would also be a good choice.

Oh yeah, its very nice.  Daiwa makes a graphite M+ XF that is supposed to handle 1/8-1oz, I would think that would be perfect, but its a 300$ Tatula AGS

I would look into Temple Fork Outfitters, (TFO).  I have been using their rods in various configurations for all of my techniques, extremely pleased.

I like my Kaden 714 but I was thinking a rod that’s a little lighter in power would be better. Although right now I’m definitely leaning towards getting a falcon
