2 pc vs 1 pc casting rod

Featured Replies

I've never even considered a 2pc casting rod. I have used them for spinning reel set ups. I never really trusted them for a casting set up. I found a rod I wanted on Amazon, but its only offered in the 2pc. In fact most all of Amazons rods seem to be 2pc. I can only assume for shipping reasons. Anyone notice a big difference in a 2pc vs 1pc rod?

Have been using a bunch of 3-5pc rods since around 2018, and they have been amazing. The important thing is to grab one from a good company, not the noname trash from ali/temu. The Megabass Triza for example, is extremely good, and that's a 3pc rod.

I'm only a couple years in to modern 2-piece rods; but I very much agree with @ABU is overpriced.  Newer rod building tech has tremendously closed the gap between 1 piece and multi piece rods compared to my youth.  I have numerous major craft and abu garcia salt and fresh water rods that are indistinguishable in sensitivity and action.

I've been switching to a lot of 2-piece rods over the last 5 years or so because I'm always afraid my kids will break my 1-piece rods when we travel on longer trips in the car. I honestly don't notice too much of a difference between them and my 1-piece rods.

I have 2-piece rods from Shimano, Megabass, and Daiwa and they have all been great.

they are much better than they used to be but 1 piece still fishes and casts better in every way. its also stronger. but ya you have to watch those tips lol

I have a few 2 pc rods from Kastking, they use a spigot ferrule system. Now called Power Transtion System on the newer models. Never had any issue with them. I don't know about other brands. If you have any questions feel free to message me.

2 or multiple piece fishing rods have been around for very long time so long rods could be transported. Fly rods date back a few hundred years for example.

Fenwick and Browning light weight glass rods improved the ferrule joint design to be nearly as strong as a one piece glass rod in the 60’s. G. Loomis and Lamiglas perfected the ferrule design for graphite fly rods.

Whenever a rod blank is cut into pieces some vibration is lost and most fishing doesn’t require high tensile strength from tip to butt. Bass anglers have been brain washed to believe sensitive is everything in a bass rod….not true. Yes you will loose some vibration feedback using a 2 or multiple piece rods but the convenence of transportation is well worth it.

In Japan multiple piece fishing rods are common and perfected the technology.

With spigot ferrules, I've had 2-pc and 4-pc versions of the same rod at the same time, and liked the 4-pc better, because the spigot ferrules moderate the taper.

Where the're really improving are sleeve-butt ferrules, and the design of the taper on each side of the joint.  Newer ferrule designs add insignificant weight - literally just a few grams.

This 5-pc Daiwa is so good, I have a full-time niche for it.

The Japanese have even tackled the ferrule wax as a technology (Bingham plastic) that hardens when you're not working it, but will soften with friction so you can get the joint apart.  Unfortunately, the soy wax is an agricultural product - they don't even show it on their US$ website, but you can sneak in a tube if you order through a broker on their Japan website (currently OOS) and other JDM shops.

Maybe in the old days, but if the two piece is from a reputable company, it is going to be very likely that most won’t be able to discern a difference. I have one piece bass rod weapons but fish 90% of the time with my 2-piece rods out of convenience for being able to fit in the trunk. I’ve been fishing this way for about 15 years now.

@ABU is overpriced, @bulldog1935, and @WRB pretty much summed it up.

Well I have exactly 1 freshwater rod that’s a 7’ light/fast by NFC- Edge rod, (2 piece) at least in this case Gary determined where this rod had the most stress and as you can hopefully see in the pictures, the reinforcing that’s wrapped into the blank. When I first saw this I thought I had an improper blank, after a deep search I found out it’s by design. It’s been a solid rod, in fact I really enjoy it. I do have several saltwater rods that are 2 piece that I use in the Gulf.. the convenience outweighs any other aspect imo..IMG_2002.jpeg.60d0413b43b4c50d0c6e0c75c93a241a.jpegIMG_2001.jpeg.282b227ee600c3ecbaab8fa321f88731.jpeg

I have gone back to all 2 piece rods. The only 2 piece rod that ever caused an issue was an old ugly stick. I have all Daiwa rods, all in 2 piece, both spinning and casting, zero issues. Much easier for my family lifestyle and vehicles. I feel no difference in sensitivity or strength.
