Trouble finding a split ring tool small enough

Featured Replies

I now own three split ring tools that are too large for the split rings I need to open.  Specifically I have a Rapala Mini split ring pliers, Gamakatsu micro split ring tool, and a Pisifun pliers.  I ordered a no name tweezer style one off Amazon but it was such a POS it was laughable.  I want to change stock barbed trebles to barbless.  Examples of what I can't get into would be Rapala CD01, F03, Berkely Thinfisher 3/16, Panther Martin #0-2...

I'm in an area that is either blue ribbon trout water or (more often) little stocked pond rainbows.  Either way, trout are fragile fickle fish.

Try the small size Texas tackle split ring pliers.  I've never had a problem with them.

For rings that small, I pull the Xuron's out of my general tool box

That looks like it might be the ticket.  As I'm sure you know, when they're small like that, the tolerances on the jaws is super important.

I used a file on mine and made it smaller.

You can get the xuron “like” ones mentioned above at hobby lobby. They’re in the jewelry section. For me, they left a little to be desired. I was going to buy a small pair of the Texas tackle ones, but they were out of stock at the time. I wound up with a pair of Dr Slick’s from TW that I’ve been super pleased with…

BPS has a pair of micro split ring pliers that are a copy of either the Gamakatsu or Cuda brand - can’t remember which one.
