Looking weightless worm rod suggestions

Featured Replies

One of my core techniques is throwing a weightless 4 inch yum dinger on a 3/0 EWG.. I currently use an Ark Lancer Pro Spinning rod 7’ M/H extra fast with 10lb braid to an 8 lb leader. The bites have been subtle the last couple weeks and I’d estimate I’m only feeling 85-90% of those “gentle ticks”… there have been several fish lately that I reel in my slack and realize it’s go time.

I’m looking to upgrade.. is there anything in the $200 area that’ll get me to 95-99% light tick detection? I’ve never spent $200 on a rod before but figure if I’m going to it should be on this technique.

Both these fish were hauled out of pads using this technique but on a different rod I was testing.. there was nothing subtle about either bite.

I fish the same line setup as you and similar worms, though I'm not fishing them fully weightless (either a 1/32 needlenose or on a light ned head).  I have no issues picking up those bites on either of my three rods.  I have the 6'9" zodias ML and the 7'2" poison adrena ML.  I'd have no problem recommending the 7'2" ML Zodias ($220) for that work or the 7' medium if you want a little more grunt in the butt.

seems like you're doing fine!!

weightless, I find I watch my line more than I feel the thump.

Same here - though I do feel the tap-tap-tap better if I'm using FC for the leader over Mono....probably why I've gone all FC for leaders no matter the # test.

Using bright colored floating braid as a strike indicator resolves detecting strikes with weightless soft plastics, the line must move before you can feel a strike. IMO you are trying to reach an impossible goal as it’s impossible to detect every strike, even visually watching bed bass in clear water.

In that price range, I would go with one of the rods from the Curado series.  For 4 inch weightless stick worms, I use the 7 foot 6 light action Curado spinning rod that is extremely sensitive.  I'm comparing it to a Zodias rod and an Expride rod that I have in the same lenght and similar action.

I fish for smallmouth in extremely clear water and I get the distance and power I need from that rod.

If you want even more power, you can also look at other rods in that lineup.

I appreciate the suggestions so far everybody.. I know I’m asking a lot, I’m really just looking for an excuse to buy a new rod. I do use high viz braid which is helpful and I run yo-zuri hybrid (copolymer) leader.

I would suggest looking at Edge rods. If you can catch them on sale you can save a lot.
I think they just had a 50% off sale.

Did the same thing when I was younger.  A 4" senko was a go to, no matter the season for many years.  I always tried to find a better rod as I got older but found that higher end rods didnt always mean better performance.  Since the vast majority of bites will come on slack line, not many of those bites will translate very well through the guide and into the blank.  The better guide train and blanks were lighter and faster.  The light weight was nice, but the faster tip means a smaller sweet spot and often doesn't load as deep so casting distance can suffer.

You definitely are on the right track already, spinning gear is the way to go for weightless senko IMO.  I would think a MH XF is a little overkill for a 4" senko, but if you like it, make sure you find something that feels good in hand and will get the job done.  I suggest looking at the 7' MH F Tatula Elite Shakey Head.  Its got the tip of a M power, but the lower end of a MH, essentially you get the sensitive tip, but you have the power to drive a hook through the bait at distance.  Try to get one in your hand before you buy it.  A Zodias wouldnt be bad either, but I really prefer a rear locking nut to a forward.

Using braid you just have to use High viz and line watch.  You can switch to FC and get better slack line sensitivity, but FC can be a headache, and its good FC is much more expensive than braid.

Going with a lighter reel will give better feel of the overall outfit, just font go too light, a tip heavy spinning rod isnt fun to use.

Your Lancer Pro is already a 40T Toray blank. Gonna be hard pressed to beat it for <$200.

The new Level NGX rods are ultra impressive for their cost.

I find them more sensitive and better feeling than Shimano's Expride which has been my favorite rod series for going on 10 years and they're $100 less.

Your big step up in sensitivity is going to be Loomis NRX or Shimano Poison Adrena and still, not that big of a gain for the massive jump in price.

My first (weightless) "5 inch senko" rod that I found that I really liked was a St. Croix Mojo Bass 7'6" ML/XF (MJS76MLXF) hair jig rod, and have loved it for the past few years. The strike detection I have with it was next level for me. I could feel those "ticks" on slack line even when I didn't think it was possible. I generally fish them wacky style with #2 or #4 finesse wide gap hooks. They have been discontinued for a year or two now.

I have been ogling the Daiwa ML-M/F 7'6" hair jig rods for a while. They make them in three models that I am aware of (Steez AGS @ $599 - aka "The One", Tatula Elite AGS @ $299 and Tatula @ $169). They have some others that are ML/F at the same length, but they might be slightly underpowered for a 5" Senko that weighs about 3/8 oz because they're rated for up to 5/16 oz, but I have not really looked closely at them.

I did pick up the Tatula Elite AGS Seth Feider rod a couple weeks ago and it is definitely a little stouter than the Mojo. So far, it has handled it's business well and I am really liking it. I've caught about twenty bass up to 5-1 with it and I am impressed, but I don't yet know for certain if I can say it has the same level of "tick" detection that the Mojo has (I suspect it will be at least as good). I paired it with a JDM 25 Caldia LT2500S-XH and I think it, or a compact 3000 are perfect for this rod. I run 10 lb braid and usually a leader of 8 lb Daiwa Samurai Camo fluorocarbon leader.

Thanks everybody.. so far I notice a lot of recommendations are lighter power than I’m used to. I like the extra horsepower of the MH because I throw into some crazy stuff and try to get them up and out quick. I’m going to see what the 4th of July sales look like, I know they can’t advertise discounts on Shimanos but at 20% off a 7’ Med/fast Zodias would be $175 but an Expride same specs would be $224 (this all depends on a sale that may not happen).. the reviews on the Expride is that it’s heavier than rated does anybody recommend that Expride for my application? I can go a little over budget if it’s worth it.

Thanks again everybody.

I've never fished an nrx or any super high end rod but the 7m/f zodias is my go to for the 4 and 5" senko and I would say it's plenty sensitive.

Agreed. I also agree that fluoro will help your detection a bit, but realistically there will always be subtle bites that you'll miss when fishing any non-moving bait. I fish my weightless plastics on a rod a bit more expensive than yours, but I definitely don't feel more than 80-90% of bites. No way.

I absolutely recommend the Expride. for the money, it is the best rod out there. And $224 is a great price!

Yes, they are stiffer than rated. I'd suggest the 6'10" Medium. That rod is sooooo general purpose. I have 3 Medium's and a M/H in the 6'10" and a Medium in 7'2".

Love, love, love!!....the Expride!

I got the Falcon Expert Finesse Jig for my weightless senkos. It’s a 7ft M/F. That rod is unbelievably sensitive and I love it!

Where is the 20% sale expected?

The only problem with Edge/NFC is that you might have to wait 3-4 months to get the rod or blank.  Also they charge your credit card as soon as you order but you may not get the rod for months.

NFC flat out tells you in their e mails if you can't wait up to 4 months for a blank don't order.

Check out other forums for more info on wait times for rods, blanks, and repairs/warranty.

I can’t give you a specific rod as others have because I have no idea what more to tell you, as you got excellent advise already

A 7’0”-7’3 MH/F casting rod is the most versatile if you may want to use it for other techniques in time.

The one thing I will say is whatever you get just try to make sure it’s the lightest most sensitive stick in your price range.
Once you settle on a few read every review you can, come back on here and ask specifically about thier real world results and their unbiased opinion.
Which you will get as some already have.

“Line watching” by buying a specific colored line for that purpose can be an effective way to detect a hit, albeit after the fact.
Keep in mind you will never be able to detect every strike regardless of what you use.

If you use a high quality flouro and use proper technique you’ll increase your chances of detecting a strike that’s happening immediately as it does, more so than just waiting to watch which way your specially colored line moves.

I know It’s not a popular opinion on here but you asked for opinions.

I don't think you can beat the Level NGX for value - they are tremendous for the price.

More hoping than expected…. But looking back at last year Tackle Warehouse ran a 15% off sale and ALF ran 20-25% off… Independence Day is usually a pretty big sales holiday…. We’ll see.
